How do i loosen and remove the belt from my 95 pontiac sunfire

I beleive you need a 15 mm socket and a large rachet or breaker bar, find the belt tensioner position the socket and turn it away from the belt until it is loose enough to come out. Slowly release the pressure until the belt tensioner is fully relaxed.

Careful and good luck

1997 2.2 pontiac sunfire

The tension pulley will have a frame around it with a square hole in it for a ratchet to fit into it. Insert your ratchet and pull it untill the belt will slide on, them release the tensioner and make sure the belt is on correctly and all the way.

How do I take off the serpentine belt?

You need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It will have a Large Pulley with a Bolt in the Middle above the Belt and a Smaller one Below the Belt that keeps Tension on the Belt. You will need a Wratchet, Socket and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt in the Middle of the Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. It will lower the Smaller Pulley so that you can Remove the Belt. There is a tensioner pulley that you need to release to install the belt. Once you find this get a long screwwdriver or pry bar and take the tension off the belt - should slip right on.

Replace alternator

Remove the neg. {black} battery cable. Disconect the two sets of wires from the alternator {one is bolted onto a post, the other is a plug}. Remove the tension on the belt buy moving the tensioner with a wrench or the special tool. {the tensioner is a pulley on a spring loaded arm bolted to the block, refer to the belt routing sticker under the hood} Remove the three or four bolts that mount the alternetor and remove it. The instal is the reverse of removal, the belt tension is self adjusting. Make sure the battery is charged.
