Question about 1999 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

99 Subaru Legacy auto Transmission will not Engage right away P-D

99 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5L - Auto Transmission will not engage drive immediately from park. Sometimes 5-10 second delay. After engaging - the gears shift normally. Sometimes a slight tap on the gas will make it shift faster.
Engine has 205,000mi, and no tranny shop will touch it.
Fluid is full, and no leaks etc.
Where can I start??

Since no transmission (or quickie lube) shop would touch the tranny due to mileage - i drained the transmission of about 6qt fluid. While at AutoZone, I asked the capacity (since its impossible to get a proper reading on the trans. dipstick) - and he told me 2.6qt So I bought 6 to be safe. After changing the filter and fluid (really simple screw-on filter) and adding the transmission fluid - It got worse! Then I busted out the Haynes manual and it said 10 QUARTS! (2.6 GALLONS!!!!!)
It was probably the problem all along - and the fluid was black (burned?) from being so low. After adding my 10th quart - and running the air out of the system, it shifts from P to D instantly.

Thanks for the heads up! Hope to get another 250K out of this car :)

Is this a high mileage engine? Sounds like restricted fluid flow delays engagement. I'd look into changing fluid and filter on the transmission.

My car is slow to engage drive

i am guessing your car is an automatic. i would think you are low on transmission fluid and the auto probably needs a service to change the filter adjust the bands and renew the oil.

My transmission is not engaging correctly. Once engaged in drive it shifts fine. To get it to engage i must rev engine until about2500 rpms and it engages

Check your transmission fluid level. When the engine is not running the fluid is not being pushed into the torque converter so check the fluid level with the engine is running, from a safety point of view have a friend sit in the driver's seat with a foot on the brake with the transmission in park or neutral. If the level is low, extra fluid can be added via the transmission dipstick tube ( DO NOT confuse this with the dipstick for engine oil!). If the problem persists it could be that you have sheared the oil pump shaft within the transmission. What ever the cause there is little that can be done by way of DIY and a consultation with an auto transmission centre would be the best next point of call

My 1997 Subaru Outback Legacy Limited started jerking when in Drive- between first and 2nd gears. I then started driving in 2nd / 3rd, then drive. When in traffic very long time, would not engage at all...

Sounds like the transmission has reached the end of service life. I have a 93 that did the same thing. It would drive until the transmission heated up then nothing, except for reverse. I had a TRW rebuild transmission installed and now my 93 Legacy has 500,000 miles. $2,200 to repair vs $25,000 to replace. The only thing you would miss is the new car smell for a few weeks. But you can keep $20,000 plus.

It is on the left side hard to spot. Look below the heater hoses. Good luck, take your time and have a great day.

Transmission problem

Sounds like some of the seals are leaking by in the valve body. Pretty expensive rebuild.

But.......
I recommend a product called KW TransX. (Blue metal container) You can find it at Auto Zone and Advanced Auto Parts. Follow the directions problems will go.

95 Legacy Ls Wagon all-wheel drive does not work.

Check the awd fuse first, if this is ok then it is likely to be in the transmission the awd section is seperate to the rest of the trans, it has its own solonoid pack which can be a problem. Take to a trans specialist for an accurate diagnosis if the fuse is ok. If the fuse is missing come back to me for further info
