On many GM products, yes, the AC compressor can and sometymes does stay active whenever the climate system is operating. If there is an AC button that allows compressor disengagement, you should turn it off (so the AC light turns off but the blower fan is still on) and that will prevent AC from cycling on and also increase mileage and power. Some GMs with auto climate control (caddys especially) there is no manual control of compressor and the body computer will cycle it even if the current settings are for heat. This is normal on some vehicles.

For an Inline 4 like I'm assuming, 1-3-4-2. If you have a V6, I believe it is the "Kindergarten Pattern", 1-2-3-4-5-6.

Air conditioning does not work. compressor is not kicking on

Compressors have a shut-off switch if the coolant is low. Check the pressure and go from there. Low coolant is the most common reason for the compressor not to come on.

Try to reset the 4x4 computer. Pull both the ATC fuse and the courtesy lamp fuse for at least one minute then reinstall both fuses. Cycle the key on and off five times. Please rate.
