How do you change the negative battery cable on a 2001 beetle. The old cable is attached to the bottom of the platform the battery sits on. There is a plastic pipe from the air filter in the way and I cannot get to the bottow of the plate.

You have a easy Job..
As the earth wire or {negative} thick black lead goes to any bolt to the engine and there is a small wire that goes to the body ,so you can put it anywhere
BUT you need to fit a wire with 2 crock clips 1 to the battery lug (under the earth term to a bolt on engine anywhere as when you take off the earth lead you might loose all the things like radio, dash lights etc so use a thin wire with clips...
Let me know how you go ,or more info wanted. Ron

How to change a bettery on a 2002 ford focus

Look at your old battery and make note of the brackets installation and the terminal (positive and negative ) locations. Remove the positive cable, then the negative cable where they attach to the battery poles. POSITIVE cables are normally RED.....NEGATIVE cables are normally BLACK. Remove the battery hold down bracket making sure you do not place anything metal across the two battery poles. Install the new battery into the battery tray, attach the hold down brackets, the attach the negative cable end then the positive end. BE VERY CAREFUL and DO NOT GET BATTERY ACID on you or SHORT ACROSS the battery poles with any metalic object. If you have not done this before and are buying a new battery from an auto center....they will...most times.....install the battery for you free of charge

Need to reinstall the car battery. Where do I start?

Find the battery compartment. It's behind one of your headlights. There will probably be a little black clamp at the bottom of the tray the battery sits in. Loosen the bolt on this but don't remove the bolt. If you don't see a little clamp, see if there is a bracket that fits over the battery. Most cars have one or the other these days. Move whatever you find, clamp or bracket out of the way. If your battery cables are not red (positive) and black (negative) then here's how you tell: the main negative cable will go straight from the battery directly to the engine block OR the chassis/frame. It will not be connected to anything else. The positive cable goes directly from the battery to the starter which looks kind of like a small coffee can with an even smaller cylinder attached to it. If you know where the battery cables go then you'll know which post to attach the other end to. Make sure the terminals are shiny clean on the battery and the cables. Once you know which wires are which, put the battery in it's compartment turned so that the cables reach the right posts easily. Make sure the little clip (if it's there) isn't under the battery. Tighten the battery terminals just a little past snug, not too tight. Start the car and if everything is OK turn it off and resecuer your battery with the clip or bracket. If it has neither, don't worry about it. The battery isn't going anywhere. The clip and bracket (there will only be one or the other) aren't on every car. The battery compartment does a good job of keeping it where it goes without them.

2001 Ford Windstar - will not start. "Clicking" but will not turn over. Replaced the starter/solenoid unit. Battery is charged. 230,000 miles, regular oil change. What next?

make sure the battery cables are in good condition. Also check to see if the negative battery cable is securely attached to a good ground.

The battery was bad and it was under warranty so i got a new one and i think i should change the battery cables how would i do that

Battery cables are attached to the battery on one end. The negative cable is attached to the chasis with a bolt on the other end. The positive cable is attached to the starter relay/solenoid.

You buy the correct length cables, remove the old ones and replace them.

Battery Removal

Lilscorpgurl -

You will want to disconnect the negative (black) cable from the battery first. When disconnecting the negative cable, be sure you DO NOT touch the positive (red) terminal with the wrench you're using.

After the negative is safely disconnected and tucked out of the way, go ahead and disconnect the positive cable (red)...taking care not to touch the negative terminal with the wrench.

When you reconnect the battery, reverse the order: positive first, negative last.

How do I change the battery on a 1999 volkswagon beetle?

Open the battery compartment. Loosen the bolt on the negative battery post first. Then remove the negative cable from the battery. Do the same to the positive cable. Remove the hold down bracket with a 10mm wrench. Lift out the battery please keep in mind it has acid in it. Now replace with new battery and connect the cables negative to negative , and positive to positive. You may need to reset your radio stations on your car.
