Hello there, The starter is located on the fron of the motor towards the radiator, you will have to access it from under the front of the car. These starters are fairly simple to change once you locate it. There is only two 13mm bolts holding it in place.

And yes it sounds like you are on the right track, I have seen alot of problems with these starters because they are so close to the heat of the exhaust.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Allen

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus. My wife left the radio running with the ignition off for a short while. Now the car won't turn over, won't start, won't jump. There is one click when trying to s

The click you are hearing is most likely the start slenoid making contact, however you should short the large wires @ the solenoid to make certain the starter still doesn't run, if so try tapping the starter with a hammer to shift the comutator a litle and try to start. Even if it now starts the starter will continue to give you problems so the proper fix is change the starter

Head lights are strong. no sound when key is turned. inside lights and radio go out, but head lights and trouble lights stay on

starter circut is not functioning. the radio and interior lights along with many other "auxillary" systems are on a switch that temporarly disables them when you start the vehicle. That system is working, the starting system sounds like it is not. Check Starter and Starting Solinoid. This applies to all Ranger, Explorer vehicles OHV 4.0, SOHC 4.0 and HO5.0 powertrains.
