Power steering fluid leaks, rack replaced approx a year ago

About a year ago I had my rack replaced on my 1999 cavalier. now it is leaking power steering fluid except 2 weeks ago it was fine for 2 weeks. Now leaking again. Obviously a hose or pump does not "repair" itself for 2 weeks - thinking maybe something was not tightened when the rack replaced, has loosened and tightened with vibrations while driving - what should I check?

May have a failure in the replaced rack. I would take it back to the shop that did the work for warranty. If you got a remanufactured rack it was re-built and may have had major problems that were not fixed with the rebuild.

Rack and pinion leaking power steering fluid through boot on right hand side. is this rebuildable or do i have to replace hole thing

Hi, welcome to FixYa.com my name is Shawn and I will be answering your question.

It is possible to rebuild power steering racks but most mechanics have not done it in years and some require special tools to perform the procedure. Industry standard is to replace the power steering rack assembly. If there is a fluid leak in the boot the rack needs to be replaced.

I hope my assistance helped you and resolved your concern, if you need further assistance please ask.

Have a Lincoln Cont. 1999 that eats power steering , does not leak out any where, but smells like its being burnt. Where does it go and how to fix ?

there has to be a leak if you are continually topping up the steering fluid.check the power steering lines closely for leak it may just be a pinhole leak.if this has rack&pinion steering check the bellows(rubber boots on either side of the rack)the fluid could be leaking into the boots past the inner seals.if it is then the rack will have to be replaced and an alignment done.check the power steering pump for any leaks as well.if it has conventional steering check the steering box seals for leaks and the hoses as well.

I have a 2003 Ford Escape that is leaking power steering fluid. I replaced the power steering pump and hoses but it is still leaking. It only leaks when the Escape is turned off.

It might be the rack and pinion kit (seals)

I had this problem 2 months ago... replaced the powersteering pump 3 times until I convinced the mechanics to look at the rack and pinion. there they found the leak, especially when I turned the wheel.. They first kept telling me there was air in the lines and it would go away. but that never happened.

My 1999 Chevy Cavalier has difficulty turning. While I'm driving and about to make a turn, my steering wheel appears to only turn about half way making it hard to complete the turn until I violently yank...

the most probable cause is the rack and pinion steering system. check for leaks in system, make sure if its full of power steering fluid.. if all checks ok, then its in the rack and pinion. that causes binding. I had a car that did the samething on turns. it was the rack doing this.

How do i change a rack and pinion bellow on a 98 chevy cavalier? I need to know if I need a tie rod end puller and I also need to know where the clips on the bellow are located I can find the first one but...

The bellows is just a dust cover. If fluid is leaking from the bellows, the rod seal is bad. It's usually cheaper to replace the rack than it is to rebuild it.

Power steering pump

Do you have the famous power steering fluid leaking and not sure where its going too? I had to replace my power steering lines as it was leaking fluid like a siv slowly at first. It was the rubber on the power steering lines leaking.
