Question about 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Power steering We have a 2006 chev malibu ls, we bought the car new in June 2008 we had power steering problems starting with a little stiffness on left turns with the display coming on sometimes to total power steering failure for long periods of time sometimes at highway speeds and while going into curves. We took the car to the dealer and as luck would have it it worked perfect i insisted that the dealer look into this further even though we were out of our warranty period. The dealer found that the power steering motor was the cause they ordered the motor and said that GM advised putting on an extra ground strap that they had to order. Now here we are little more than a year later and the power steering is going out again. Called the dealer and he began by telling me that they did not make the part and so on, I advised him that I was not going to purchase this part and installation every year cause GM could not figure out the problem. Called Gm and told them of the problem told them that I feel that I should not have to pay (after all I own part of the company), The car is due to go into the shop this Monday for diagnostic and GM will be monitoring and calling me on Tuesday to let me know what if anything they are going to do. Anyone with this type of steering problem should do whatever they can to get these vehicles recalled for repair!!!

Why does my 2008 chev Malibu drive like it has no power steering?

Are there an light's lit on the instrument your not familiar with ? DO you have regular Malibu or Malibu Classic ?
Also does yours have hydraulic power steering or Electric power steering ? GM had known problems with EPS - electric power steering . Your best bet would be to take it an have it checked out at a qualified repair shop .

2004 chev silverado ext cab. No Power steering

Hi Hollings,

You description was very good, I need to ask for a specific.

When you turn to the left, the wheel is stiff like the engine is off or does it turn smoothly but the vehicle doesn't turn or seem to respond.

I'm trying to rule out broken mounts,

Also, if the wheel is all the way to the right, is it difficult turning back to the left the whole way, or half way. See where I'm going.?

Please comment back your findings

Best regards

The power steering is electric. There is no pump and no fluid to check. Most people end up with a new steering column installed. The electronic steering is what helps the car get such great gas mileage though. This is a big problem with these cars and you need to take it to the dealer. Hopefully GM is on there way with a recall. If they dont do something i will never buy another gm product again!

Clunk sound when turning left in 2005 Chev Malibu

I have 3 2005 Malibus - 1 Maxx LT, 1 Sedan LT, and 1 Sedan LS. All three needed to have the steering rod replaced by 50K miles. You'd feel a muted clunk through the wheel when turning. The other light clunk issue I had with the Maxx was I hit a parking curb and it broke the lower radiator bracket. In certain bumps you'd feel a light clunk. A new $22 bracket fixed the issue and now I make sure I never pull too far into the spaces in the garage at work.
