It sounds as if you have an old code stored and its popping up if there is nothing wrong with the sensor try unhooking the battery for about 5minutes then hooking it up if that dosent prevent it from coming on again you will need some one to clear the code out of the computer.

The part that will trigger the coolant lights is the temperature sensor, when it going bad it tend to give the computer a wrong temperature sensing and cause the light to trigger on and off. Have your temperature sensor replace. thermostats and thermostats switch is good idea to have it change every 65-75k miles in the jaguar.

SOURCE: Adding coolant to a 1998 Jaguar XK8

if the coolant light is on or comes on when driving you MUST let the car cool down at lest 1 hour before doing anything, after this cool down time lift the hood [u.s.a.] or bonnet [uk] looking from the front of the car on the right hand side towards the back of the engine compartment is the coolant header tank, about 5inch square black in color [u.s.a.] colour [uk] with a large screw top and some rubber pipes coming from it,this should be topped up with coolant right to the neck of the screw cap when you remove the cap to top up the coolant unscrew it slowly as it may be under pressure you don't want hot 212F[u.s.a.] 100C [uk] coolant in your face do you.good luck.

1998 S-reg jaguar XK8 drives perfect until reverse is selected then goes in to reduced performance mode. using a fault code reader fault code P1646 and P0706 were read.

Seems likely it is just a transmission cable adjustment needed. Please see my whole note (not a musical whole note) above under Clarification...

I'd go to this site and read the info... http://www.europeantransmissions.com/Bulletin/DTC-jag/Jag/307-01.pdf

On xk8 the coolant level indicator is showing - can i top up with water or do i need coolant. are there any follow ups required?

The only time you should use water is in emergencies only, always use coolant specific to your brand of car. The cooling system is a closed system needing only periodic maintenance, the fact that the indicator light is on I would take it for a check up.

How do I add coolant to my 1998 Jaguar XK8?

There is a tank separate from the radiator, add the coolant there, follow the hoses from the radiator to the tank.
