Question about 1993 Ford F350

I had someone replace the bettery cable and now there is no power to the fuse box or ignition switch. i beleive they didnt hoook the wiring back on the supressed diode correctly

My first question is why did the cable require replacement ?
did you have a a little melt down of the wire(s) up there

if my suspicion is correct sounds like you only replaced what could be seen as dammaged sounds like there is more

a 6 dollar test light from your autoparts store will lead you in the right direction just ground (any metal of the frame) the clip of the light and walk right down each wire using sharp tip to poke thru wire light on it's good light off there's your problem

It depends on which cable they replaced if its the positive cable then that one comes off of the starter and they may not have hook it back up to the starter if its the ground cable that one runs off of the body usually off of the frame it may not be attatched or it may not be tight.

Why fuse #7 burn out instrument cluster


http://www.my-chevy-venture.com/fuses.html Indicates it serves the indicator lights for your shift lever Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low. So you have a short to ground (body metal) somewhere after the fuse box on to the indicator light and possibly the Ignition switch. Has someone worked on the car recently? Take it back or ask them to fix it. If someone you know.
A very careful inspection of all the wires from the fuse box on to the indicator light switches and possibly the Ignition switch will hopefully reveal the short. Sometimes the body metal will cut into the cables and cause a short, sometimes from a collision. I like the new very bright led flashlight for this kind of inspection in the dark. Good luck

Trouble-shooting your Isuzu starter..


Basic operation of a starter:
Your engine's starter motor is an electrical motor that is used to rotate the engine in order to get it to fire up. This motor draws a large amont of current from the battery (in the order of 70 Amps and up). In order to supply power to the starter a solenoid is used, it acts as a switch between the battery and the starter motor. This solenoid also engages the starter gear with the engine's flywheel and disengages it once the engine is started. Because the circuit for the solenoid also draws a heavy current a further relay is needed to control it.
The diagram below shows the electrical layout of the starting system.
  • i : Battery
  • ii : Starter relay(located in the relay box in the engine compartment)
  • iii : Starter solenoid
  • iv : Starter incorporating solenoid and motor.
  • v : Engine
  • vi : Battery earth cable
  • vii : Engine earth cable
  • viii : Ignition fuse
  • ix : Starter fuse
  • x : Solenoid to starter supply cable
  • xi : Ignition switch
  • xii : Starter motor
When the ignition(xi) is turned it supplies power from the battery through fuse (viii) to the starter relay(ii).
The starter relay activates and supplies power to the starter solenoid(iii) via fuse (ix)
The starter solenoid activates and connects power from the battery to the starter via a short cable(x) between the solenoid and starter motor. This allows the starter motor to turn.

General trouble shooting.
Turn the ignition off.
1/ First you need to check that the fuses are intact.
Keep the ignition off. Place the vehicle in Neutral. Chock the wheels and engage the parking brake.
2/ To prove the starter motor, connect power from the battery positive to the cable (x). This must be done with jumper cables. Touch the jumper cable to the connector on the back of the solenoid where cable (x) connects. Take care not to short circuit the jumper cable to the engine or vehicle body. It can be a tight fit and might not always be possible. If you hear the starter motor spin then it is working along with the engine earth cable. If not, connect the negative lead of the jumper cable between the battery and the starter motor body or any other bare piece of metal on the engine and put the positive lead on cable (x) again. If the starter motor does not spin it needs to come out for repair/replacement. If it spins check both the battery earth cable and engine earth cable and repair where nescasary.
3/ Once the starter motor has been proved move on to the solenoid. Remove the thin wire from the solenoid. Using a small piece of wire, connect battery positive to the connector where you just took off the wire. The solenoid should kick in and the starter motor will turn the engine. If the solenoid does not kick in, remove the starter for repair/replacement of the solenoid. If the solenoid kicks in then replace the starter relay.

If the starting circuit still does not operate the fault will be in the wiring. This needs reasonable expertise and if you dont have a voltmeter handy is not advised.
Bear in mind on automatic transmission vehicles there is an additional switch (Mode switch) wired in between the ignition switch and the starter relay. This switch is on the transmission itself and if faulty will not allow the starter to operate even if steps 1 to 3 were successfull. The same goes for the anti theft/immobiliser system.

Brake lights not working on my 1985 ford f150 after I replaced the brake switch


disconnect turn signal switch wires @ column, put power to wires to brake lights. that cks wiring to lights. next put power to wires through turn signal to ck switch. Power runs from brake light switch to turnsignal switch, to lights.

94 ford escort lx. Only clicks at relay when trying to start. Replaced battery, ignition relay, neutral safety switch, ignition switch, starter tests good. Power going to starter but no power to exciter...


if you have battery power on the large terminal at the starter and the same on the smaller wire when someone Is turning the key to start and the starter has a good ground then the starter is bad drawing too much amperage causing the clicking sound.

Why will a 1990 Chevrolet C1500 not turn over after replacing starter motor, battery, spark plugs, and alternator with no burned wires?


First, get a service manual, I don't recommend trying to track down these wires by hand (and I don't have my books anymore). Gotta trace the solenoid power back to the ignition switch. Since this power works separately from the fuse box it could be that the fuse is blown, after that pull the ignition switch. A test light should tell you where the power isn't... When I did an engine swap, I missed the lead to the battery that powers the fuse box for the stuff in the cab. Happy hunting!

97 Pontiac grand am - no power to 4 underhood fuses (f/p injector, ign mod, erls, abs) i have figured out those 4 fuses are powered by a thicker pink wire not from the battery. Any insight where that pink...


Not sure about the pink wire but these fuses get their power from the fuse box itself. The fuse box is fed directly from the battery 12V hot signal by a red wire maybe your red wire has turned pink over time. That wire comes from the battery, a jumper post from the battery, the starter wire, or the back of the alternator depending on the model of the GM. i believe your Grand-Am has the fuse box powered directly from the positive post on the battery via the battery cable. The fuse box gets also gets an input from the ignition switch so that when the switch is in the on position the bus bar containing "ignition on" voltage becomes hot with battery voltage. one side of the fuse comes from this voltage bus bar and the other side of the fuse goes to the component.

Nothing that runs through the fuse box dont work. inst. cluster blank. nothing happens when i turn the key. soleniod fine. cant find where the ignition wire runs to the ignition switch. ignition switch...


Have someone try to crank engine over while someone else takes a hammer and tap on center of starter motor if engine starts then the bendix is bad in the starter.Replace starter.

Won't go in drive or shift out of park someone broke in and took wires off the fuse box


YOU HAVE TO REPAIR WIRES IN FUSE BOX.BECAUSE THE BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID + BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH NEED POWER TO WORK.WHEN YOU TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH.BY WIRES BEING CUT.NO POWER GOING TO BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT SOLENOID.ITS NOT GOING TO SHIFT FROM PARK TO DRIVE.YOU HAVE TO FIX WIRES.

2000 Olds Bravada ignition


Okay .. had the EXACT same problem - word for word .. turns out, that my positive battery cable was corrodid badly.. the ignition switch wasnt getting any power or signal - so it didnt know the trans was in park, so it locked the key in place... and all power cut off obviously because no juice was going thru the cable.
Apparently however.. you will get almost the exact same symptoms if the ignition switch burns out... so first test the battery cables themselves.. if they are fine .. then plan on replacing the ignition switch.
