Check the fuse for the TCM (transmission Control Module) It will be located in the fuse box/ power distribution center in the engine bay.

then in that case get it to a repair facility like a dealership and a transmission shop such as Aamco and let them run the computer tests on it. there could still be the TCM fude, relay, or even the TCM module itself( its like a seperate computer just for the trans). These types of problems/symptoms are not easily diagnosed thru verbal or written communication as it would be 'hands on'

Knocking sounds like lifter noise due to "dry start". Try using quality oil filters which have a anti-drain back valve, better quility oil. On trans issue, when did you last change trans fluid and filter?

Knocking on cold start may be hydraulic valve lifter collapsed until engine builds oil pressure. Quality oil filters contain anti-drain back valves which help prevent this, while cheap filters do not. Try using Wix filters and quality oil in correct weight for your local expected temp range. Trans issue may relate to dirty trans filter. When did you last change trans filter and fluid?

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

Gears won't engage

I am assuming that it is auto. trans??Check trans. fluid level and look under car to make sure linkage is connected and moving. Also when did it stop working ? all of a sudden or after sitting for long time? or over time? But quick guess, If all is good most likely torque converter went out. Then tranny issue, sorry no easy fix!!!
