Question about 1998 Ford Windstar
HI. The overdrive solenoid will only engage if the vehicle is moving in a forward motion. The reverse function dose not use the overdrive capabilities. With that being said, the issues you are experiencing with the illuminated light(flashing), is caused by a faulty OD solenoid. This solenoid is located inside the transmission pan, near the valve body. either the solenoid, itself, is faulty, or there is an issue with the actual switch(OD). This require you to inspect the switch wiring, and the solenoid should be tested as well. The transmission pan will need to be pulled, and the fluid drained to access the solenoid housing.

Flashing overdrive light means there is a transmission problem and there is a code stored in the transmission. It could also be a PCM issue. If it turns out to be the PCM, go to your local junkyard and pull out another one from a 1996 Ford Windstar. I see them in my local junk yards all of the time. Here is some more information in the flashing overdrive light problems: http://www.ford-forums.com/ford-windstar/12214-overdrive-light-blinks.html

have someone scan it for transmission codes. Most likely it is your Torque Converter that is going out, but it could be a solenoid, What color was your fluid?

If your overdrive off light keeps flashing this indicates an electrical or mechanical fault has occurred with your transmission and a diagnostic code has been stored in your trucks on board computer. The stored codes can be read by diagnostic scanner and will aid in making a diagnosis of the problem that is occurring.
