How do I replace the rear axle

Is it rear or front wheel drive?
Rear wheel drive. take of the wheel. Behind the hub there should be bolts that hold the axle in place. Undo these, then yoy need something to pull the axle. They are sometimes a bit tight and need a bit of force.
What is wrong why do you need to remove it?

When i am driving and get to 30 km/h it starts to sound like something is ratling, but when i switch to 4x4 it goes away and will stay away untill i switch back to two wheel drive.

sounds like the transfer case or front driveline has a loose component, it gets enough tension when in 4x4 to go silent, but loose enough to make noise when not in use. also look at front u-joints if in a pre-96 pickup/

How does the rear brake drum come off of a 96 nissan pickup?

Removing the rear brake drums vary little from one vehicle to the next.First, loosen the lugs on the rear wheels, release the hand brake, block the front wheels, jack up the rear and use jackstands. Then remove the rear wheels.Looking at the drum after the wheels have been removed, you will notice two threaded holes one on each side of the axle flange.Give the brake drum a smart rap or two with a plastic mallet or piece of wood and spray the flange w/ WD 40 or brake parts cleaner.Obtain a bolt with the exact size and thread to fit the hole. I found it useful to "borrow" such bolt from around the work area-My favorite is the one fastening a cable or a hoseclamp to the differential. If that don't fit, look around under the hood:there's one there you can use.Thread the bolt into the hole alternating from one hole to the other. The bolt pushes the drum against a flange inside and removes the drum. After work, adjust the star wheel brake adjuster so that the drum turns with hand push with a little drag.

4 wheel drive will not engage

Test it by setting the rear end up just barely off the ground with some jack stands and setting the hubs to lock (if they are manual). Put it in 4 wheel and try to drive away. If the vehicle does not move then very carefully have a helper check and see if the front drive axles are spinning while it is in 4 wheel and in gear while running.
Spinning axles... hubs are at issue
No spinning axles... Transfer case issue.
