black smoke is an indication that its over fueling and burning properly. check fuel pressure as too much pressure can cause excess fuel to be injected into the cylinder. also check the plugs and air filter as they may need to be replaced. check for codes as it could also be a bad temp sensor, throttle position sensor, maf/map sensor.

BLACK SMOKE WHEN EXCELLERATING

Well black smoke is usually a sign of a rich fuel mixture.
Assuming the check engine light is not on, my first guess would be a dirty air filter.

Black smoke when reved sharply while in stationary position , and when i try to keep a steady speed , a slight vibration from engine every 2to4 secs then a puff of black smoke . this is in a voltswagon...

Diesel?? Black some is unburned fuel, due to poor combustion. Get a compression test, but you may also have a leaky injector.
Gas engine?? Due to too much fuel, too rich. Make sure air filter is clean, Clean up your intake and IAC system. Scan it if it continues.

1989 Ford F150 runs fine then starts smoking black smoke and quits. After 20 minutes will restart and go again.

You have an excess fuel delivery problem. Black smoke indicates that too much fuel is entering the combustion chamber. If this vehicle has a carburator, check the float bowl level. If it is injected the main things to look for would be a stuck throttle position sensor or an injector that is not closing
