Question about 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

I recently disconnected the battery and after I reconnected it the fuel gauge wants to go back up in a counter clockwise position. The peg is stopping it. Seems like it should go back up in a clockwise manner where it wont be hitting the peg. When I turn the car off the needle just hangs straight down. Never saw this before and not sure what to do. Thank You, Mike Salantai

Check to be sure that you have not reversed polarity. That is check to be sure that the red wire is on the positive side of the battery and the black wire is on the negative side. ALSO check to be sure that you have good contact. Clean the inside of the clamps and also the posts with emery cloth.

Fuel tank and fuel pump removal on 1991 ford ranger

Open the hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Unhook the negative battery cable from the terminal with the battery wrench. Position the cable end away from the battery so that it cannot accidentally contact the battery during the rest if this procedure.

  • Disconnect the fuel filler neck from the side of the truck bed with the socket set. Unbolt the truck bed retainer bolts from the floor of the bed with the socket set.

  • Lift the bed up and off the Ranger's frame with the assistance of another person. Walk the truck bed off the back of the Ranger and set it off to the side.

  • Rap the rag around the tip of the screwdriver, place the tip against the fuel pump retaining ring and tap the screwdriver's handle with the rubber mallet to turn the retaining ring counterclockwise. Remove the ring by hand.

  • Disconnect the fuel pump wiring harness and fuel lines with the screwdriver. Lift the old pump out of the gas tank and insert the new pump in its place. Make sure the new pump occupies the same position and orientation the old pump had prior to removal.

  • Tighten the fuel pump retaining ring with the rag, screwdriver and mallet by rotating it clockwise. Reconnect the wiring harness and fuel lines with the screwdriver.

  • Lift the truck bed off the ground and place it back on the Ranger's frame with the assistance of another person. Make sure the fuel filler neck clears the frame and seats into the filler neck hole in the bed wall when you're lowering the bed onto the frame.

  • Reinstall the bed retaining bolts with the socket set and reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery with the battery wrench

95 bmw 525i no dash lights no tach no tremp gauge and fuel gauge pegged way past full

Why was the battery missing to begin with? I would start by checking all fuses under dash and Central hub. Check for burned in-line fuses,if any, coming off of battery cables.

99 4runner Fuel Gauge has inaccurate reading

Disconnect and reconnect gauge or you can install an external fuel gauge. You can try checking for blown fuse or ground connection.

The gas cage is not working//

Inside the gas tank is the fuel sending unit. It is a floating device that is held on rails and it slides up and down depending on gas level and then sends a signal to the gas gauge. Either the float is leaky or it is stuck. The down side is you have to pull out the tank, then use brass punch and knock the ring counter-clockwise until it becomes loose. Then pull out and change the sending unit. Do make sure negative battery cable is disconnected and wiring harness and fuel lines are disconnected before pulling the tank.

    Gas gauge stuck on empty

Adam, I like your solution, but this is easier:
    1. Get a strong magnet
    2. Use the magnet to move the needle into the top half of gage (don't take anything apart)
    3. Test it by turning the car on.

Fuel Gauge Stuck on Full 98 Pontiac Montana

When gauge is pegged at full, usually means a bad ground. Check wires at fuel tank, wiggle around, maybe one came off. The bad news is it is hard to get to without removing the tank. Sometimes you can reach arm in and get to them. Also check body ground at read of van.
