The most likely problem would be the sending unit in the tank is bad. This will require you to drop the tank to replace. Due to the age of the car,I would also recomend replacing the fuel pump while you are already in there. You could however just keep going like you are, and recording how far you can go, and fill up at that time. You will eventually have to replace the fuel pump due to age and can fix it at that time. If you do the work yourself-couple hundered bucks for pump ad sending unit-shop about 8-9 hundred for parts and labor depending on where you live.

Bad sensor in the gas tank. one way to test it is to unplug fuel plug at tank, turn key on and it should read full, then ground out the purple wire and it should go to empty. if nothing happens you have a broken wire and need to either run new wire to purple in cluster. but if this action proves a success then just change the fuel sender in gas tank.

Most likely the floating arm in the gas tank is stuck. The arm is attached to a sensor. When the gas level goes up and down, so does the arm with the sensor.

Do I have to remove the gas tank to inspect/change the fuel pump on a 1991 pontiac grand prix?

Unfortunately, yes. It's a pain. I own a 1991 Pontiac grand prix SE 3.1L.

My fuel pump problem started when I ran out of gas (gas gauge was offset) Of course it shuts off w/o gas but it will more likely kill your fuel pump and clog the $#!t out of your filter.

If it makes a buzzing sound under the vehicle w/o the engine running, near the trunk area, replace it along with the filter.

I have a 1991 Jeep Sport with a full gauge that always shows full. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or fix?

This is going to sound a little back woods but try hitting your gas tank with a hammer or kicking it because your float that sends the amount to your gauge is stuck.
