My 2006 Trailblazer LS fuel gauge has been flutuating up and down and now when I fill it up it just registers empty. Is this going to cause my fuel pump to actually go out??

I was told you can't just replace the sender unit that you have to replace the whole thing. and then I was told that there was an access panel of which I did not find. So if I want to replace this I need to drop the gas tank, correct???

If your gas gauge is not working and you may have a check engine light on as well then you need a new fuel sending unit. Dealers may tell you that you need a new fuel pump and that a fuel sending unit is not available for your vehicle. However, this is not that case.

But please correct your faulty fuel gauge for a better life of your fuel pump.

No, there is no tie between the fuel pump and the float gauge assembly. These two processes are mounted on the same device ( the sender assembly) but they work separately. The main thing to remember with this type of system is to keep the fuel tank at least half full, these pumps are very sensitive to heat and the fuel in the tank works to keep the pump cool. The sender unit is probably the culprit here, you can change just the sender or the pump, or change the whole thing as a unit. The gauge is rarely if ever at fault for these circumstances.....but it can happen.

2006 ENVOY fuel guage reads empty after fill up. What is the cause and how to rectify?

Usually I find there are two common causes for this problem. If the gauge goes to empty after a fill up but then starts to work and be fairly accurate as the fuel level in the tank drops then it's often the fuel level sending unit which is attached to the fuel pump module inside the tank. I have seen some guages go bad also [actually the servo motor that runs the gauge] but usually the gauge will stick in one spot and rarely move or go to either end of the scale and stick there. A good shop should be able to determine the cause of your problem pretty quickly. Hope this helps and good luck!

My gas gauge goes from full to empty and stays on empty even when the tank is full.

Common problem on the 03-06 Trailblazer instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Trailblazer fuel gauge problems

Fuel reads empty at all times

this problem is caused by a defective fuel gauge sending unit, this sender is located inside the fuel tank and is sold with the fuel pump assembly as one piece, around $200

Fuel gauge

khooper, in another forum, told me that "Chevron Techron Fuel System Treatment Plus can remove harmful sulfur deposits from the sending unit and a filmer agent that can prevent the deposition of said sulfur"

My 05 Trailblazer LT 2WD.
Erratic readings, and when the fuel level was below 1/2 full, the needle would sit on "Empty" with the amber light staying on.

So I went to a dealer, they replaced the fuel level sensor (p/n 19177712 SEN KIT 3.107 $118.62) with labor $270.00 for a total of $398.86 this appears to have fixed it for now.

I also talked to another mechanic who blames ethanol for these deposits !
