This is suppose to be an interference engine meaning if the belt breaks the piston hits the valves and either bends them or could crack a piston. but i've put several on these cars and it turn out ok by just replacing the belt. also the water pump is run by the timing belt this is the time to do it while you're in there

03 tiburon mechanic replaced bent valves water pump fan or timing belt but didn't explain why before it was brought in my brakes locked up while I was driving? Car over heated first smoke and leaking

Bent valves are a sign of a broken timing belt and when that happens on an interference engine it can stop very quickly. Overheating and smoking might mean the engine suffered seizure and when that happens the engine will stop even quicker so it could seem like the brakes came on.

Other than those possibilities there is nothing to connect the two events together other than pure coincidence.

if the timing belt brakes the valves cant move so yes if a timing belt brakes it will likely damage your engine. if the serpentine belt brakes you should be alright.

Honda Accord metal grinding sound, esp when starting car when cold

A timing belt usually makes a loud squealing noise (like a 'shriek/scream') when it is worn or slipping, not a grinding noise.

A quick check - before you start the car - is to pour some water onto the inside of the belt where it goes around the pulleys. If there's no noise at start up, you know it is the belt at fault (or the metal pulley/s are worn).

There are kits to replace the timing belt (and bearings). Have a look on Ebay:

If the noise happens before the car moves - it obviously can't be your brakes. When backing up the noise may appear louder simply because your head is turned ..

If the noise is actually coming from a wheel, it possibly could be the backing plate on the brakes - the thin disk behind the brake may be rubbing on the rotor.

However.. a grinding noise ... if it is coming from the front of the engine in the general area of the timing belt be very wary - if a bearing or the belt fails, your engine will be history.

Why not give a mobile mechanic a call? Those guys are usually quite good and a lot cheaper than a workshop

How often do you need to change a timing belt on a 1998 camry , and what happens if it brakes

Most manuals recommend checking every 50k and replacement at 150k. If it breaks while the engine is running, especially on the road, the repair cost 4 times as much because it will most likely damage the valves and the piston heads. The Haynes and Chiltons repair manuals, both are good and available, can explain replacement and checking methods. I use the timing checks as a guide for checking the Belt/chain. If your timing is bouncing all over the place your belt/chain is probably stretched or the device meant to keep tension on it is not working properly. Some vehicles with Timing belts as opposed to chains have a tensioner built in to maintain the proper tension on the timing belt. That are also a few vehicle that employ this with a timing chain.

Im getting belt squeak its not harmonic

The belts may need to be adjusted. Make sure the squeak is not from your brake pads. You may need to have new brake pads. You also, may have gotten water in your engine from a poor quality gasoline or from rainy weather. Make sure also, you have fluid in the small tank which is the brake fluid.

Timing belt broke

I hate to be the barer of bad news, if your timing belt broke, you will probably need to replace the heads also. Not a small job. When a timing belt brakes the timing is out (of course) and when that happens the valves hit the piston and bend. So remove the water pump belt, a/c belt and the alt. belt. you will have to remove the harmonic balancer through the right wheel well. Before you remove this make sure number one piston is at the top of the cylinder. Then unbolt the black plastic timing belt cover, clean all the debris out. When this is done check the all the pulleys in there to see if they are nylon or metal, if they are nylon replace everything (nylon cracks over time from stress). Once that is done you will have to remove the heads to check for valve damage. If damaged you will have to get new or used heads or have yours rebuilt.
