I have a 97 cavalier, z24. the car cuts off. when you start it, the engine shakes really hard and there is a pinging sound that sounds like it is coming from the catalytic converter/muffler area. Then when I looked at the muffler, what seems to be metal shavings are coming out of the exhaust. what could this be?

No the water pump will not affect the smog test. You probably failed the idle? Usually with this age of vehicle you can replace the o2 (oxygen) sensor and it will pass. Cleaning the MAF if it has one cant hurt either if you do it right.
Did they read the code at advanced auto? If so what is the code(s) they gave you? I wouldn't go buy new stuff until you have an idea of why you have a check engine light.
You should probably sell it before it gets worse. Sounds like it may be an electrical problem that would be a really easy fix if it didn't require the engine to be moved out of the way.
my friend is selling a 1997 z24 chevy calvalier manual with 148,000 miles. should i buy it for 200,dollars. its looks ok and runs ok what should i be looking out for before i buy it.?
It sounds like you may have a broken exhaust valve spring, although, like you have found out problems like this can be very hard to diagnose, but anyone with a compression tester and couple other tools could find out if this is the case. Hope this gives you another idea where to look.
