Question about Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

2 Answers

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder that has developed a problem with the automatic transmission. Was driving down the highway and the transmission bucked and then acted as if I put it in neutral. I had to have it towed home. I downloaded the OBD2 codes and had P0760 and a P0765 fault codes. When you start the car and put it in any gear, the engine rpms increase but the car doesn't move. I checked the linkage and everything is connected. Also, while idling, there is a rattling sound coming from somewhere under the park neutral position switch in the transaxle. Has this problem been seen before?Any ideas that I can look into?

Is the underdrive solenoid replaceable or will the require complete disassembly of the transaxle?

Any idea where I can get this solenoid? Also, is there something in the control body the solenoid is attached to that can make a rattling sound after the engine has warmed up? It doesn't make this sound when you first start the car, but after warming up it starts and it appears to be coming this area.

P0765 Shift Solenoid D Malfunction
P0760 Shift Solenoid C Malfunction

Check Conditions, Judgment Criteria
• Failure signal of the underdrive solenoid or 1st gear incorrect ratio or 2nd gear incorrect ratio or 3rd gear incorrect ratio is input to the engine control CPU from the transmission control CPU.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

The most likely causes for this code to be set are

•Underdrive solenoid failed.
•Open or shorted underdrive solenoid circuit, or loose connector.
•PCM failed.

Check the above possibilities to fix the problem in your car. The solenoid failure is only the problem what your are facing in idle.

You might need to take the trans axle to replace it.

The solenoid is replaceable, at times it may just be dirty and would need cleaning and at times a leak on its oil seal or the solenoid may be bad. You do not need to disassemble the transaxle.

Probably the wave spring washer which is a common failure on these transmissions. Check the pan for metal parts if this happens. You'll have to replace it if so, but make sure they use the updated, thicker washer (part # 2741A007).

2001 mitsubishi eclipse. Automatic transmission

Transmission may be low on transmission fluid or the transmission fluid pump failed. If it's electrical, you can still get it in to gear, but would not shift gears. Good luck and keep me posted, check transmission fluid level and have the transmission line pressure tested. Before that check all your fuses.

At traffic light and car wouldnt go forward but

You'll have to find the source of the leak to find out what went bad. It almost sound like a line going to the transmission cooler, but you could have a hole in the transmission casing. See if you can put it on a jack and figure out where it's leaking from.
