Hi oglesby_jack! I will be glad to assist you. check and clean the spark plug, the distributor, coils, there is a possibility that the spark plug , contact point and condenser and coil, is not giving enough electricity in order to fire up the engine. If still don't starts the engine, you need to replaced the distributor, plugs, wires and the coil.

Being 1989, Im sure it has over 100k miles on it, the car may have problems from beginning and may be that's was the reason why they stop paying on car which they cant afford to fix it and decided to let it go back. Peoples do those thing and realized is not worth fixing being the year of the car and the condition of it. make sure all the dash light are on when the ignition switch is turn to on position, keep in mind the ignition switch its works like a master switch also which turn on everything. if the car getting fuel and sparks, my ownly guess will be the car is out of timing. older cars with high miles the timing belt tend to wear and jump time, once it jump time, the car can have all the gas and fuel its wants however the car will not run. timing belt should be replace every 75-100k miles. hope that help some good luck.

I have same car 1989 honda crx, what worked for car was I took the Idle Air Control Valve ( IACV ) off and cleaned it with carb cleaner. What you will need is a 12mm socket and only has two screws, and pliers to take off two small hoses attached to it.. And most important carb cleaner to clean the inside of IAVC.
