How To Install Replace Change Taillight and Bulb 2000-04 Subaru Outback

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback wagon, LL Bean Edition. I just noticed that the left rear brakelight, tail light and blinker light do not work. I replaced the brakelight bulb but the brakelight does not...

Owners manuel chapter 11 & 12 should show you the fuse box placement and layout..there are two fuse boxes, inside behind the coin holder to the left of the steering wheel, slide out the holder..I believe #5 on the fuse box is the fuse for tail/brake lights. Also under the hood in the engine compartment on drivers side there is the main fuse box.

2005 VW Jetta TDI Wagon: Left brake light doesn't

Very difficult. You have to open the inside access door on the drivers side, remove the amp and wheel well cover, pinch the tabs and the bulb cluster will release. The taillight assembly is bolted from inside of the car, so it can't be done outside.

Brake light is off

There's a recall on your issue. Take it to the dealership.
You likely have a defective brake light switch.

NEWS: Volkswagen recalls nearly 800,000 cars
Defective brake lights on Golf, GTI, Jetta, New Beetle and R32 are a potential safety hazard and should be replaced. February 26, 2007 - NEW YORK ( -- Around 800,000 Volkswagen vehicles have been recalled Monday because of faulty brake lights, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
The 790,000 vehicles include Jettas, New Beetles, Golfs, GTIs and R32s...all in the United States.
The specific years and models affected are:
  • 1999-2005 Jetta sedans
  • 2001-2005 Jetta wagons
  • 1998-2007 New Beetle
  • 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertibles
  • 1999-2006 Golfs and GTIs
  • 2004 R32
The malfunctioning brake lights and brake light switches could fail to come on or remain stuck on.
This recall expands on one announced by Europe's No. 1 carmaker last year, when 362,000 Jettas and New Beetles were recalled due to the same defective part.

Volkswagen said that dealers will immediately be prepared to accept service appointments to perform the repair at no charge, but the notification process isn't scheduled to begin until April.

NHTSA did not say if any injuries had been reported linked to the defective brake lights.

Brake light bulb was changed, now brake light is on

Most likely the incorrect bulb was installed or a faulty bulb, causing an electrical cross over. Replace the bulb, and check socket.

Rear brakelights don't work but center brakelight does

Pls check:
  • the brake bulbs;
  • the bulb socket and the terminals/contacts;
  • the grounding of the brake lights. A workaround is to simply hardwire another grounding wire from the body of the brake bulb socket to the body of the vehicle.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

2005 and a half, Jetta 2.5 warning light inside tach display

I have the same problem, because it's difficult to see the rear brakelight halo when you are not at the right angle.  And, when my wife was driving in the Jetta--right in front of me--that's when I finally saw which brakelight was out (1/2 a halo).  (2006 Jetta 2.5).
