How do you know if a coil is bad?

what engine, a 4 or 6, will make a diference; any way if it a 6 cyl just switch coils from another cyl and see if code chances if not your problem may be an injector. On other hand if is a four you have a distribuitor take your cap out and inspect coil for cracks or carbon tracks same thing with distribuitor cap is allways a good practice to relace cap, rotor and wires at same time. resistance on distribuitor coil primary 0.36 to 0.64 ohms secondary 9.0 to 18.0 ohms if a coil pack 0.64 ohms to 1.23 primary and secondary 9.3 to 18.8 good luck

Ignition timing doesnt advance on 89 f150 with 5.0 and 4 speed transsmission

to star lest look for a timing by pass plug in your wire harness, follow wire from distribuitor, some are located only a few inches form distribuitor conector some all the way to inner fender on drivers side, is this litlle conector is not missing then your distributor advance weigths are stuck, remove distribuitor cap and rotor and try to free them also check if springs are ok, if you found this to complicated buy a rebuilt unit, good luck

disconect trany solenoids if you can test it at lower speedsi,,distribuitor may go crazy ,like high voltage going to wrong wires so change that if it is easy enough, fuel pressure regulator may play a roll or coolant temp sensor under the distributor also

Loss of power

Do you know how check if every cilinder is working? with the engine in idle, go to the distribuitor cap and carefully unplug one at the time, every cilinder spark plug wire,in the cilinder you dont see a diference in rpm variation, that cilinder is not working, replace spark plug, if you see spark jumping fron the distribuitor cap torch the spark plug wire, another cause to a cilinder fail could be a loss of compression in one or more cilinder
