Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

I just started my car and heard an extra noise from the engine that sounded bad (louder, kind of grinding and high-speed whirring) so I turned the car off but the noise continued. It fluctuated a little bit, but not based on anything I did. After turning the car off, it would not start again. There was no clicking noise or any attempt to turn over. The extra noise in the engine continued until I unhooked the battery, and started up again as soon as I tried to reconnect it. Smoke was coming from an area low to the ground, in the front of the engine. It could have been from the very front of the engine space, or the engine itself, it was hard to tell. Obviously something in the wiring is messed up, and maybe the computer is part of the problem, but if I could figure out which part was going, it sounded kind of like a fan, maybe I could disconnect it. But also, I'm not sure why the car wouldn't start.

Sounds like you starter hung and was still turning even after the engine started. I would remove the starter and have it tested.

Is the serpentine belt still intact? The grinding noise maybe the water pump which would account for the overheating.

Check your belts and pulleys. Belts should not be cracked and pulleys should turn freely with no noise.

My 2000 Explorer makes a whirring sound when you accelerate - can this noise be due to a bent tierod? The previous owner had an accident involving the front end and was told that the tierod was haywire?

Typcially tie rods will only make a clunking noise or a squeak. The whirring sound if would suspect to be a wheel bearing. When you drive, slowly turn from left to right, if the pitch changes than its the bearing.

I have a whirring or griding in my drivetrain. I can coast donw a hill and let the engine idle and I still get the noise. It doesn't sound any different going around corners and gets louder as the speed...

this sounds like(no pun intended) you have a wheel hub bearing assembly failing. they will start a whirring or humming noise and then a growling or grinding noise the worse they get. from your description it is a rotational noise and gets louder and maybe a higher pitch as the vehicle speed increases. have this checked out right away so no further damage is done. they are not cheap assemblies as most GM and Saturn vehicles have the ABS sensor built into them(if your Vue has ABS).

Engine wont start All interior and exterior lights come on clicking noise heard under the hood Radio still works

Check all of your fuses then make sure that you are getting 12 volts from the battery. If starter is making a grinding noise, it sounds as if it is not getting enough voltage. If it is and makes a whirring noise, it may be the starter itself. Hope this helps.
