My 2006 chevy cobalt wont run in drive it dies but will run good in reverse

On some old Buicks and Oldsmobiles the overdrive would stick on. A bandaid cure for them was to unplug the cable under the hood, but you no longer had overdrive. I heard that changing the transmission fluid would clear that up. There's no overdrive in Reverse.. placing the car in 1st or 2nd gear could bypass o/d also if they don't use the same gear set. Once up-to-speed, place the car in Drive. This only works if the reason the car dies is it can't accelerate in that high a gear at such a slow speed.

2010 ranger when im in town driving at twenty five or thirty do i need to leave transmission in or out of overdrive when exactly should i use the overdrive button????

it is immaterial when the over drive is to be used
If the constant shifting is annoying you then switch it off
The over drive is just that
an extra high final gear in the transmission to reduce the engine rpms at high speed to save fuel . It can be set for automatic engagement or turned of if pulling heavy trailers or caravans or carrying full loads and so save wear on the transmission

1999 ford e250 - trans slips like nuetral when going into high gear -- can it be repaired or does it need a complete overhaul?

when you say high gear are you taking about overdrive, if thats what your talking about ther is an overdrive solenoid in the pan, and also you may want to check the fluid and make sure it doesnt have shavings in it.. if it does you will need to pull it because lockup in the torque converter that works hand in hand with overdrive went.. dont drive it if its metalic, pull it and replace converter, flush it, and top it off with fluid and you should be good. hope this helps

Why weneed O/D on transmission if I wanna to off it it must show on panel off?

Overdrive is a very high final drive gear ratio, to save gasoline. But you should turn it off on hills or if you are going too slow. There should be an indicator light telling when it is on, but it should go off automatically if you are not in the highest regular gear, and if you are not going fast enough.

I have a 92GL, somestimes it will not shift into high gear(Drive 3 or what ever the top gear is). Somestimes it works fine. Car has 218000 miles on it. Any ideas to what might be causing this and/or the...

My car just had the same problem and i bought a over-drive bypass plate from IPD and now it works just fine, just put it on yesterday. My overdrive solenoid was the problem. So, instead of paying $160 for a new one, i paid $40 for the bypass plate. I drive a 91 Volvo 940 Turbo with over 250K miles and now i have my overdrive back. I think if your overdrive relay was bad, the shift light would come on on the dashboard. So it may just be your solenoid. Sounds like you need a rebuild on your transmission. The overdrive is going out in the transmission system.
