Question about 2002 Ford Super Duty F 550

Cranks over ok but will not start. Also, acts like its going to start after the glow plugs are good and hot and puffs white smoke.

Sounds like its out of time at the injection system and or engine timing

White smoke is usually a good sign of un-burnt diesel so reading your post and all the things you have already changed ie the glow plugs I would have the injectors tested to make sure they are atomising properly as it sounds to me like when your car isn't under load ie at low revs you have a cylinder that isn't firing correctly

My 2001 caravan overheated sputtered then died. wont start. tries to start but wont.


Sounds like you might have clasped the rings and you have no conpestion do a conpestion test on it

We think it is the diesel injection pump but not sure


Sounds like not all the glow plugs are working.It should run fairly smooth on a cold start if all of the glow plugs are working..Also you shouldn't drive off on a cold start with a diesel,Its really hard on the motors..At least give them 10 to 15 min on a cold start..The oil in them is a really thick oil and when there drove on a cold start theres no oil lubricating the internal parts and will cause the motor to seize up..You may already no this and dont mean you drive it as soon as you start it i just wanted to let you know..When you get alot of white smoke it could be two things,Theres water in the fuel which will make it not have much power die and smoke..But if it runs fine when its warm theres some bad glow plugs...Hope this helps you and have a great day

2000 peugeot 306 1.9 diesel smokey on startup and misfiring when cold but is ok after heating up no wAater loss any ideas


change the glow plugs i used to have a 306 and a huge cloud of white smoke come out of the exhaust on start up lol, changed the glow plugs and was clear as a whistle, its because the glow plugs dont get as hot as the others and fires up on the hottest cylinders so if you have two glow plugs out the other two are being forced to turn over hope this helps you ;)

Do i need to worry if i have a puff of black smoke from the exhaust when i first start my car. its black and only for a minit. also my car always smells hot like oily after even a short journey. would this...


65 thousand isn't much for a diesel engine.
I would not be too worried if it is only when you first start it up.

Diesel smells like oil at the best of times especially when it gets on your hands :) I have an old diesel engine (280,000 km never had the head off ) with no fancy turbo or anything on it. It used to blow a cloud of black smoke when I started it in winter time. It used to crank more before it started when it was cold too. The problem turned out to be 5 out of 6 of my glow plugs were broken. So it was just squirting more and more diesel into the cylinder before it generated enough heat to start. When it finally kicked all the fuel burnt at once hence the black smoke. There is a way to test your glow plugs (assuming you engine has them) with a multi meter. Or just get a mechanic to check and replace them as needed. Mine were about as complicated as changing a spark plug.

This is just my experience. I'm sure there are other reasons your can might be blowing black smoke.

My vw t4 2.5tdi year 2000 van is a knightmare to start


look at the spark plugs an see if they look like the have chocolate milk on them. You may have a head gasket going out. White smoke is usually burning coolant. Also you can look at the uderside of the oil cap. a little chocolate milk look is ok, that's pretty normal for a cold climate a lot is not a good sign.

Puffing white smoke is a sign of a blown head gasket. Coolant is getting into the cylinders.

2.0 litre 2002 wont start


hi from uk just a couple of questions ? as car is now with this cold starting?? when engine does start do you get blue/black heavy smoke and engine has a slight hesitant ? then smoke clears ? engine runs ok? and no problems starting for rest of day ? if this sounds like the problem you have? then this is the glow plugs that arenot working at optimum you only need 1 or 2 poor and engine has trouble cold starting may i suggest you first check that when you put ign on there is power reaching the 1st glow plug at least? if ok this will eliminate relay and fused link? these glow plugs must glow white hot from tip upwards you can change these diy with a little patience and are obtainable fro most motor super shops here in uk anyway hope this helps?and inspires you? please update on how you go on? or if you req further info ?
