Can you please tell me what the pressure plate bolts on a 98 twin cam excel should be tensioned to?

    Thanks for your response, i already have gearbox out and want to refit new clutch and pressure plate, what is the torque settings for the bolts that hold the pressure plate/ clutch to the flywheel?

    sure mate the build date is 5th month 1998 according to compliance plate, engine is 1.5 litre double overhead cam, it is three door hatch manual 5 speed, we are in australia if that makes a difference?

Hi, can you please verifiy the year make model and size of the car? egine size in liters please. they did not make the excel in 1998. so just let me know and i will give you the torque specs. thank you

    the specs are 15-22 nm or 11-16 ft.lbs. witch means torque them all to the first number then go around again and torque to second number. if you have any more question please ask. good luck

I guess we talk about the clutch disc components?

  1. First disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Next remove the trans axle assembly from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the pressure plate attaching bolts. If the pressure plate is to be reused, loosen the bolts in succession, 1 or 2 turns at a time to prevent warping the cover flange.
  4. Remove pressure plate release bearing assembly and the clutch disc. Do not use solvent to clean the bearing.
  5. Inspect condition of the clutch components and replace any worn parts.

What size is the tensioner pulley. On a 1998 Saturn ls2 twin cam


The hex that you would use if you are trying to remove the belt is a 14mm I believe. The bolts to remove the tensioner from the engine are definitely 10mm.

Where is the crankshaft sensor location on lanos 2001 ? I changed my camshaft position sensor and the timing belt, but the engine light still on with the same code and the mechanic said it's the...


both the single cam and twin cam engines use the teeth on the crank pulley for crankshaft sensor which is bolted in bracket attached to block near oil pressure switch, hopefully you didnt dent(bent) teeth on crank pulley from dropping it or putting pulley down a bit roughly because they bend really eazy.
also is the crank pulley bolted up in correct position?
is the timming belt tension correct from when you did cam belt?
if tension wrong or timming out by a tooth it will set crank sensor codes, even possibly cam sensor codes and if you get timming out more than 3 teeth either way(advanced or ********) you will bend valves.

I need to know how to set egine timeing when replaceing timeing belt...


if its a twin cam 2.0L, turn crank over until these marks align up with centre crank bolt (to remove pulley remove smaller outer bolts) then remove belt tensioner to remove belt should use cam lock tool to hold cams in position. turn tensioner with allen key anti-clockwise to get pointer in "V" section then do up 13mm retaining bolt. turn over by hand a couple of times and recheck tensioner position as well as timming marks all align up again before reassembling and starting engine.

hi, here is a guide i have come across on this site written by another expert it should be the one for your engine but always double check.

If you are unsure what you are doing then please go out and buy a haines workshop manual as these tell you every detail you need to know so that would be your best solution.

Please dont do this work if your unsure what you are doing as you could damage the engine beyond repair so you have been warned;

Timing Belt - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.8L SOHC (AFC) V6 Engine
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  3. Remove the engine accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routing Maintenance And Tune-up.
  4. Turn the engine by hand to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the firing stroke for cylinder No. 1.
NOTE The large holes in the camshaft sprocket lock plates should be on the inside facing one another.
  1. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the lower left side of the engine block. Make sure the engine is at TDC and install the threaded crankshaft holding pin Tool No. 3242 and lightly tighten.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt covers, the crankshaft vibration damper and then the lower timing belt cover.
  3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts slightly and use a suitable pulley to release the sprockets from the tapered ends of the camshafts.
  4. Loosen the tensioner roller and remove the drive belt.
To install :
  1. Install the timing belt over the sprockets, then the idler rollers and lastly over the tensioner.
  2. Install camshaft alignment tool holder Tool No. 3243 into the camshaft alignment flanges.
  3. Check and adjust the cam belt tension such that the upper left portion of the belt between the tensioner and the left cam gear can just be twisted 90° ( 1 / 4 turn).
  4. Tighten the cam belt tensioning roller to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), and the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  5. The balance of the installation is in reverse order of removal.

2.8L DOHC 5V (AHA) V6 Engine
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.

  1. On the cylinder block near the crankshaft, remove the sealing plug from the lower left side of the engine block. Make sure the engine is at TDC and install the threaded crankshaft holding pin Tool No. 3242 and lightly tighten.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt covers, the crankshaft vibration damper and then the lower timing belt cover.
  3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts slightly and use a suitable pulley to release the sprockets from the tapered ends of the camshafts.
  4. Using a 8mm Allen® wrench, rotate the timing belt tensioner roller clockwise until the tensioner is compressed; then, insert a 2mm spring pin through the tensioner housing and tensioner plunger to secure it in place. When the plunger is secure, release the wrench tension.
  5. Remove the damper-to-crankshaft bolts and the damper.
NOTE It is not necessary to remove the center bolt when removing the crankshaft damper.
  1. Remove the serpentine belt idler and the crankshaft damper guard.
  2. Mark the running direction of the timing belt and remove it from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Make sure that the camshaft pulleys and the crankshaft pulley are in alignment with TDC of the No. 1 cylinder's compression stroke.
  2. Install the timing belt; make sure the timing belt is installed in the correct running direction from which it was removed.
  3. Using a 8mm Allen® wrench, rotate the timing belt tensioner roller clockwise until the tensioner is compressed; then, remove the 2mm spring pin from the tensioner housing. Slowly, release the tensioner spring pressure to put pressure on the timing belt.
  4. Install the crankshaft damper guard and the serpentine belt idler pulley; torque the idler pulley bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  5. Install the crankshaft damper and torque the damper-to-crankshaft bolts to 15 ft. lbs. If the damper-to-crankshaft center bolt was removed, torque it to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm) plus 180° 1 / 2 turn).
  6. Remove the Crankshaft Holder tool No. 3242 and install the sealing plug.
  7. Replace the remaining components by reversing the removal procedures.
  8. Refill the cooling system and the automatic transaxle. Connect the electrical connectors. Install the negative battery cable last.
  9. Test drive the vehicle.

I hope below steps can help...

1. Remove the transaxle.
2. If the pressure plate will be reused, paint or scribe the alignment marks on the pressure plate and flywheel for assembly reference.


Do not allow oil or grease to contaminate the clutch disc facing Even a trace of oil or grease may cause clutch grabbingor slipping. Handle the disc by its edges and do not touch the facing.
Loosen the pressure plate bolts one turn at a time to release the pressure plate spring tension evenly. A failure to release the tension evenly could cause distortion of the pressure plate.


3. Remove the pressure plate bolts, the pressure plate, and the clutch disc. While loosening the bolts, use SST to prevent turning of the flywheel.

Head bolt tension setting


these specs straight from service info
single cam
25Nm + 70deg+ 70deg+ 30deg
twin cam
25Nm+70deg+70deg+ 30deg

alot of after market gasket sets are the 25Nm and 3 lots of 60deg and the extra 10deg bolts are meant to be replaced (use once only) alot of bolts tend to start stretching when doing last 10 deg use oil on threads and washers under bolts 25 and 3 lots of 60deg is correct and more commonly used.

Belt tensioner assmebly went bad


Take the Right hand front wheel off, remove the plastic splash panel. Obviously, first remove tne belt. the tensioner should be slightly up in the wheel opening. Remove the pully, center bolt, remove the bolts attaching the tensioner asm. Local autoparts store should have replacement for around $30.00. Replace follow instructions backwards. While at auto store reference saturn manual for torque to tighten bolts when replacing. Do not over torque into aluminum block.
