Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

2 Answers

96 dodge caravan wont shift out of low gear. It was fine till I pulled away from a stop light then noticed that it was not shifting up. Pulled over and turned car off then it worked fine for about 20 miles. At witch time I left a parking lot and it never shifted up again.

I agree with kirkx about things to check .. maybe this added suggestion will not be needed but that transmission has a special "limp along" feature .. that is, if it detects something wrong then the "limp along" mode is involked .. thats intended only to allow you to get to a service shop .. it may limit what gears you can use and can even lock up the torque converter .. you can still drive but it will lurch when you put it in gear and it may not shift ... its not unusual for the transmission to go in and out of the "limp along" mode for awhile until even more damage is done which locks it in that mode or until it quits completely .. lets hope you are just low on fluid ... make absolutely sure you use the correct fluid .. this tranny has a cooling problem (due to very low internal spacing) and needs a special thin oil to keep it from overheating .. you might consider having the tranny flushed ... they force a cleaning fluid thru it to wash out scale and deposits .. about $100 .. that wont help if its already damaged but worth a try since a new tranny costs about what the 96 is worth .... i love my 96 .. wish it would last forever .. the tranny repair shop tells me to expect from 75,000 to 150,000 lifetime .. but i have seen several with 200,000 or more miles .. maybe thats just luck ..

Did you check the AT fluid level?
You need to do that with the engine running.
If the fluid is not low or dark and burned, then the only thing left is the linkage or kickdown. I assume you can put it in all the different gear settings, so it is not the linkage. But the kickdown can prevent it from getting into high gears. Kickdown can be a electric switch on the gas pedal, on the linkage, or even controlled by vacuum going to a modulator diaphram on the tranny.

I have a 1996 dodge caravan 2.4 litre w/automatic transmission. Sometimes the transmission shifts fine and other times it won't shift at all. If it won't shift I pull over cut the van off and restart it...

This is called limp mode(2nd gear). This means the onboard diagnostics have detected a problem. This could be as simple as a bad speed sensor or could mean a bad transmission. If you have all the gears sometimes most likely there is a bad sensor or solenoid. You will need to have codes pulled and ask the shop to tell you the CVI values. If you get back to me with this information I can tell you what is wrong.

well the taking off in second could be a sensor or vacume line...but when you step down on the gas real hard it is suppose to shitf to low that would be your kick down vacume line..

1996 Dodge Ram Transmission shifting problem

I had the same problem with my 96 Ram 1500. I thought I was going to have to pull it out and get it rebuilt or just replace it. That was at 134,000Km it's now got 210,000 and shifting like a dream. What I did to solve the problem was this, as follows:
1. No lucas transmission Fix makes things worse.
2. Get your self a new transmission filter and gasket
3. Grab Gunk transmission medic 12oz
4. Grab 7 Liters of Valvoline ATF+4 transmission fluid (Made for chrysler transmissions)
5. Drop the trans pan and drain all the oil, clean pan and magnet
6. start truck for 5 seconds and the pump will pour out another 1 liter
7. re-install filter, gasket and pan, then add your Valvoline ATF+4
8. Add, the valvoline, transmission medic and make sure you have the right level of fluid

That solved my transmission problems, instantly it was shifting better, I no longer had to let off the gas to make it shift. Now if you have large pieces of metal on the magnet, and it's totally covered in filings, you might want to consider rebuilding the trans. My magnet had usual clutch.

Anyhow good luck, let me know if it did the trick for you.
