The starter motor is held in position by 2 bolts, the top one also secures the engine to the gearbox. The head of this bolt is a special D shape which engages into the body of the Starter motor. To undo, from the rear o/side wing, reach down behind the fan housing and you'l; find a nut (17mm) with a small amount of the bolt coming through it. Use suitable spanner to undo (turning away from you) If not been off foe a while may find that after a few revolutions all starts to turn. This just means head of bolt has become disengaged. reposition with a long screwdriver and start again.

Vw super beetle won't start after sitting for a few days. After I arc the solenoid, it will work.

If you put battery voltage to the starter solenoid &
it works & the starter works, then the solenoid control
circuit has issues

Fuse,ignition switch,neutral safety switch,clutch sw
& such, depending on what the car has

You could try switching relays but doubt that is an issue

I just bought a 1974 VW Super Beetle and plan on refurbishing. The car runs, however, it seems reluctant to go very fast. Comfortable at 55mph, rapping pretty hard at 65mph, and really doesn't want to go...

Save money and just make sure the timing is spot on. If that does not make for an improvement nada will unless you have brakes that are not disengaging.

How do you remove the starter on a 98 beetle 2.0????

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a terminal puller. Raise the front end of the car with a jack for easier access to the starter.
Consider removing the intake and exhaust manifolds on vehicles with a 010 automatic transaxle. This may provide better access to the starter motor. Place all nuts and bolts in a safe place to prevent loss, such as a baby food jar, because you will need them later.
Disconnect the electrical connections from the starter. If it might be difficult to remember where the wires attach, use masking tape and a permanent marker to label them before disconnecting.
Remove the bracket that secures the starter to the engine on 010 transaxle models.
Use a floor jack to support the weight of the engine, because the starter bolts also secure the front engine mount to the transaxle. Also support the weight of the starter. Remove the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter motor straight out from the transaxle to remove from the engine.
Take your malfunctioning starter to the parts store with you. Aftermarket distributors remanufacture most of the starters they sell, so you can likely obtain a partial credit toward your new starter by exchanging your old one. Be sure that you take care not to damage the starter in transit, because the better condition it is in, the more you can get for it
Purchase a replacement starter that has the same or higher cranking capacity (power rating) as the original starter. Also, match the bolt patterns, drive gears and electrical connections. Your owner's manual may list specifications or the auto parts technician will help you determine them. Purchase an owner's manual at Volkswagen of America (see Resources).
Reverse the removal process to install the new starter. Torque the mounting bolts to between 33 and 44 foot pounds (45 to 60 Nm), depending on the engine size. On engines with a 010 transaxle, tighten the mounting flange bolt to 15 foot pounds and the bracket bolt to 15 foot pounds
Lower your Beetle back to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the key in the ignition to see if your new starter motor functions correctly.

How to replace the generatos on a 1974 super beetle

to replace the dynamo on any air cooled vw, you must remove the cooling shroud. the dynamo also turns the cooling fan which is housed in the shroud itself. if this is your first experience with aircooled vw then your BEST bet is to go to your local bookstore and locate "how to keep your volkswagen alive, a guide for the complete idiot". it is an invaluable source of info for some who may or may not be mechanically inclined. ive been doing this for over 20 yrs and i still have my first one.

There is a bolt that runs through the starter into the back of the car right in front of the bolwer of the engine. there should only be that one bolt. there is a regular nut on the end of the bolt. take the nut off and the bolt will come right on out.
