Question about 1999 Ford Explorer

I have a 99 ford explorer xlt awd 5.0 4 spd automatic transmission. My speedometer and cruise control work intermittently, I also have a periodic ABS issue with the pedal bushing back just prior to a stop. Are these related? Suggestions?

Sounds like the ABS sensor there are four sensors each located near the brakes

ok if the speed control is not apart of the abs sensor then it could be either the fuse in fuse box or another bad sensor i had a ford truck one time and it was located on the rear drive axle in the middle if it`s not there try on the transmission also check to make sure the wires or not damaged or just has come unplugged in some way.

Transmission speed sensor

You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L 4x4. My speedometer and odometer stopped working. Every other gauge on the cluster seem to be working fine. My cruise control also works as it should. I've been...

If the speed sensor was defective the transmission would not shift right and you would have no C. control, also the check engine light would be on. I think what you have is just a defective speedometer head, it is electronic and I have replaced dozens of them for this problem at my dealer.

Where is the ABS sensor located on my 2004 Ford Explorer XLT? My ABS light will periodically come on then goes off when you shut off the engine. I also have lost my cruise control function.

There should be at least 5 abs sensors:
One for low brake fluid------- check master cylinder for low fluid, if it is low( use dot 3 brake fluid ) to fill it.
The other 4 on the back side of each wheel called wheel speed sensors ( which are tied in with abs system).
To really pinpoint the problem, an abs code scanner should be hooked up to it, that would tell what is causing the light to come on.
I think advanced auto parts store or auto zone check it for free (if there is one near you) otherwise some places charge $80.00 to $100.00 for 30 seconds just to retrieve the code.
As far as the cruise control, it could be a vacuum problem or accuator problem, etc. Without testing it's hard to say.

Speedometer works intermittently

It is most likely the speed sensor in the transmission.

Will a 98 transmission from a Ford Explorer XLT fit in a 97 Ford Explorer XLT?

No, which kind of surprised me!! Depending on the engine and drivetrain, some 1996 transmissions will work.

Sometimes this works, ABS light on, check engine light on, speedometer not working, and the automatics start shifting hard or not shifting at all? One bolt and the part is cheap, its weird how one part controls so much.

Ligths of 4x4 are flashing on and off? is this a censor problem or it can be my transmission?

Call your dealer and give them the Vin# of your vehicle. There are still 16 milllion recalls for the cruise control and it can affect the 4x4 and ABS indicators as well as brake lights.

99 Ford Explorer V8 5.0 AWD - My speedometer works intermittently. I have replaced both front ABS wheel speed sensors and the one located on the rear differential. Occasionally it will start bouncing then...

Could be a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Located on the transmission. Not an expensive fix at all. Have a diagnostic check run on it from any auto parts store if you have a check engine light on.
