What relays control what on an 1989 jeep cherokee...there is no cover... Here is my problem: In 1st gear it cuts off and on like someone is turning the key on and off, but in reverse it runs fine. Also, it backfires at around 1700-1800 rpms.

I have checked fuel pressure... its at 35-38 psi. The engine shouldnt know what gear its in...Ive changed the TPS, the AIS motor (idle control), cap, rotor button, wires, plugs, fuel pump and injectors. None of which helped.

Try the neutral safety switch, or crank position sensor, those two will point you close to the right direction( look for any kind of cracks, damage

That wierd, how does the engine now what gear the trans is in? check that you have good fuel pressure for the backfiring problem. 33-40 psi or so. fix the most obvious first (back firing)

I have a 1989 cherokee the headlights, tail lights don't work

sounds like either a relay problem or a short. the only thing i can recommend is getting an electrical diagram for you vehical and following it and seeing if you can find any cuts in the wires or a broken fuse. It should be fairly simple to figure out a broken wire from a wire thats fine. good luck!

Where is the fuel pump located on my 1989 Jeep Cherokee?

Right behind the battery under the hood. Pull off the black cover with two turn clips and it should be the second relay if you're looking at the car.
