Question about 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse

2 Answers

My daughter was driving her 08 Eclipse, it just stopped running on the highway. It wouldn't start back. The starter wont engage now. Starter motor just turns. She said it made a funny noise before it quit running. Sounded like someone threw gravel on the front of the car? Anyone help?

Usually when the starter won't engage, it is because of a misalignment of the teeth in the flywheel. Sometimes just turning the engine over by hand, a quarter turn or less even, allows it to start up just fine. If not, then it is probably the starter. Although it really is too new to need one yet. It should all be under warranty anyway.

Start looking at the starter, verify its either working or not and go from there. is the engine turning over? is the cam turning? if not then the timing belt is broken and possible engine damage.

What would cause a load noise after replacing starter?

Some starters must be aligned for the proper engagement; with chevys it is with shims. Check your shop manual for your car model and vin to find the procedure for setting the proper clearance.

Might be your battery is not charger to it's fullness, or pump your gas one time it might not be getting enough gas, it's been cold try it.

The starter wont stop running after car is started

Can be caused by a few different problems:

1) Ringgear/pinion gear worn, causing them to remain meshed
2) Starter axle shaft worn causing pinion to not retract
3) Electrical fault causing soledoid to remain engaged

First, disconnect main lead on rear of starter (large wire from battery to starter) and try the key, using the test lamp to confirm that the signal wire (small) is only live when the key is in the start position (when key springs back to on, it should go dead) If so, then problem 3 can be ruled out

Remove the starter motor from the engine and inspect the starter pinion gear, check for wear on the pinion gear, if it has scalloped enough to catch and not be able to retract, check ringgear on flywheel.

Inspect pinion axle shaft, depending on starter motor design, it may have multiple axles, the main place to check is where the pinion slides up to engage the ringgear, bad wear on that shaft can cause the pinion to become stuck engaged.

Last test is to fire up the starter out of the car, and see if the pinion fails to retract after the solenoid feed is stopped.

My 2001 eclipse makes a strange roaring sound and wont turn over when i try to start?????

If I had to guess, I would say that the starter is not engaging the engine. When you turn the key to start, it energizes the starter and a solenoid that "pulls" the starter gear into the flywheel gear to turn the engine ovr. I suspect the roar is the starter motor turning and not engaging. You need to replace the solenoid, on some cars it is part of the starter and not available by itself.

Wont start

Could be an electrical problem. Clean your battery connections. Sounds like you are not getting voltage to the ignition coil. Check fuses. Check if horn, wipers, turn signals are working. Try this test: turn on headlights and then turn ignition key to start. The headlights should dim if the starter solenoid is engaging. You did not mention if it is manual or automatic transmission but most cars have an interlock switch that prevents the car from starting if it is in gear.
