Need know how to repace dash fuel gauge on a 1992 cadillac

    It is a digital gauge. At first when you started the car it would read CCCC, Then if you hit a bump

    it would read correct and another bump and it would read CCCC, now it is blank. This started after I had the oil changed and I think the Kid push the two reset buttons to hard and broke the circuit board or there is a loose connection of the back of the Circuit board that is why I want to pull it to check the connection and the board.

Is the fuel gauge the only thing not working? Or is the whole digital dash not working? If it is just the fuel gauge then it could be a bad fuel sending unit. Also see if the bulbs are burned out behind the instrument cluster. Go to your local junkyard and find your make and model and pull a replacement instrument cluster. I see the 1992 Cadillac DeVille in there all of the time in my local junkyards. Here is how to remove it from your car:

Disable airbag system (If equipped)
1. Remove screws in the defroster vent
2. Remove screws in A/C vent
-there may be dash panel screw located in the glove box
3. Put shift lever in "N", set parking brake, and put steering wheel in the lowest position
4. Lift dash up and out
5. Disconnect electrical connections underneath dash panel (if any)

    Remove instrument panel top cover (defrost panel), prying upward with a small flat panel screw driver, depending on interior trim sun sensor and twilight sensor may need to be removed from bottom of cover. Remove three top cover retaining screws from inside grill openings, remove ac vent outlet grilles from front panel by gently pushing on side of vent to release retaining tabs, pull vents straight out. Remove a5 and b5 from trunk mounted fuse panel, remove a3 fuse from engine compartment fuse box. Disconnect 2 harness connectors from top rear of cluster, remove 4 cluster retaining screws, lift cluster slightly to remove PRNDL unit screws from bottom, lift cluster straight up and out of instrument panel. Reverse procedure to install, be care full to make sure all electrical connectors are aligned to prevent braking.

Look for the wiring harness coming from the top of your fuel tank. There should be a single black wire all by itself. If you were to follow that wire, you will see that it is attatched to ground, or at least should be. If the connection is corroded, there is a possibility the connection is not grounded. If not the ground wire, you may have to replace the fuel sending unit inside the tank. -------------- "Talking about fuel gauge issues and how do you how do you diagnose, or what what the concern is with the fuel gauge. This is an older type electrical fuel gauge that you'll find in many, many of the older vehicles. The newer ones use electronically actuated gauges, but this is the dash unit right here, and obviously the gauge doesn't read correctly. Sometimes it can read all the way full and never go down, and sometimes it could read empty all the time and once in a while someplace in between. And what you want to determine first of all is whether or not, you know, you have gas in the tank, so you want to know get an idea of how much fuel is in the tank. And in the tank is a sending unit that actually is a little float assembly, and a and a rheostat type of arrangement there, and the float actually floats up and down on the gasoline; has a little pointer that rubs on a coil, and it has varying resistance. And that varying amount of current goes up to this dash unit right here and it interprets that signal and tells you the level of fuel that's that's in the, that's in the tank. And usually it's the tank sending unit that's going bad because that's mechanical. Either the float develops a hole and starts to sink, or that little contact that rubs on the on that rheostat coil wears out and sticks or the coil breaks and it sticks in one spot and you don't get a good reading, so that that can cause that that particular issue. Another thing that we have on these gauges is what's called a constant voltage regulator. If you have an oil pressure gauge or a fuel gauge, and a temperature gauge and the gauge reads high all the time or reads low all the time it could be your instrument voltage regulator or constant voltage regulator which fits in behind there. And what it actually does is takes the car system voltage and drops it down to about five volts instead of twelve volts so that if you get a fluctuation in voltage it's not going to cause the gauges to go up and down, up and down and read all over the place. Newer cars use electronic fuel gauges so you you have to use your scan tool and actually scan the computer and look for concerns with with the fuel gauge. And a lot of times there are updates or programs where you can actually reflash the computer to fix the fuel gauge, so you can actually fix the fuel gauge electronically by reflashing the program. You usually have to go back to the dealership because they have the software for that type of operation, and all they do is plug it into a car's computer system and they can actually set it to reprogram itself." --------------------------- The fuel gauge is probably off due to a bent arm inside the gas tank that the fuel pump is mounted to. The reason the gas tank fills slowly may be that there is a kinked vent hose that comes from the gas tank. ------------------ thanks this will help.please do rate the solution.,thank you for using fixya.

Fuel/temp gauges not working. blows hot/cold air full blast all the time. once in awhile digitals start flashing like a strobe.

i just got a 93 deville doing the same thing. I ordered a new body control module online for under $100 so I am hoping that is the problem. It is behind the glove box and control much of the dash information system.

THEIR IS A SHORT IN THE DASH BOARD THIS IS COMMON PROB. ONLY WAY TO CORRECT IT IS TO REPACE THE HOLE BOARD....SORRY

It sounds like your fuel sensor is faulty. I've seen this happen quite often with GM vehicles.

My 1992 Coup de ville cuts out when it gets down to 8 gallons or less. Why? Other wise runs great. Fuel pump maybe? Thank you, Mark D. Johnston

a fuel pressure gauge to check the pressure sort of a special tool a fuel filter may cause something along these line of symptoms but it would be at any fuel level for the filter. The only way to really know is the pressure when it happens

Digital heater countrol and fuel gauge not working

i had the same problem in my 91 deville but the fuel gauge was intermittent at first, working most of the time then eventually it quit working all together, i also replaced my ignition switch thinking that was the issue but what actually happened is the fuel gauge shorted out the 16 volt supply from the bcm (body control module) which also feeds the ac and in my case the digital speedometer. your speedo probably isnt digital, but if you unplug the fuel gauge from the harness your ac gauge should come back on or vise versus unplug your ac and the fuel gauge should come back on right now im trying to locate fuel gauge. i hope this info is helpful to you, all you need to remove the gauge is 1/4 inch drive rachet and 7mm socket and a phillips screwdriver (#1) for the trim
