Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

I have a 2003 Galant, and recently replaced the engine and also the fuel pump. The car ran great for 2 weeks, but 3 days ago, the car quit in the driveway. I couldn't hear the fuel pump activating, and replaced the pump again. I can now hear the pump when I attempt to start the car, but it will not start. I checked the plugs and they were dry. I also checked the spark, and it is getting great spark. Would the mass air flow sensor cause the car to nnot run at all? I hate to buy the part and not fix the problem. I had 1 code in the computer which was a misfire in number 1 cylinder, which I cleared. It reads all good, but still won't start. I don't have an expensive scanner like snap-on . The car belongs to my brother in law, and is 60 miles away. I have already made 2 trips there, the first to remove fuel pump and the second, to replace the pump. I use parts from a salvage yard, and have had good luck up till this point. I would like to help him because the garages there really take advantage and charge outrageous fees for repairs. Any clues to what the problem may be?

Yes a Mass Air flow can keep a car from starting, And I do agree with you about not wanting to buy parts not needed that tends to get pricey. You said you are getting great spark, you sound very mechanicaly inclined so I would suggest spraying just a touch of starting fluid into the throttle body to see if it starts for a few seconds to verify your fuel pump. Also if the car has a tach watch it to see if you are getting rpm signal when you are cranking to eliminate a bad crank sensor.

Good luck and I hope this helps you A bit.

That code is an emissions cannister leak and is not related to the engine failure. IT is most likely the crank shaft sensor that is bad.

2003 Galant will fire but will not start fuel pump or filter?

It could really be either. The filter is the cheapest to replace (Usually around $20) and according to Mitsubishi should be replaced every 40,000 miles or so. I would replace the fuel filter any day of the week before going into replacing the pump. Hope this helps you.

I just changed the two belts that run my engine and the water pump and the idler pulley. I have a 2003 bmw 325i. It was running great since we did the repairs for about 1 month now! Now all of a sudden my...

When you say that it tries to start but does not turn over - I interpret that to mean that the starter is cranking the engine, but the engine fails to start. Is that correct?
The ignition on these cars occasionally looses a single coil, but is not prone to loosing all ignition on all cylinders at once, so probability indicates that the problem is lack of fuel delivery.
This car is prone to two fuel delivery problems: 1) Failure of the fuel transfer pump that moves fuel from the driver side tank to the passenger side tank where the fuel delivery pump is located. If the car runs out of fuel when the gas gauge registers 1/4 full, and runs again if you add more fuel, this is the problem. 2) Failure of the fuel delivery pump. This is less common, but my wife's '04 330 lost a fuel pump at 80k miles, so it can happen.

98 Olds 88 starting problem

Update--after getting car back from 3rd shop, it ran flawlessly for about a week or ten days. Then started doing it again. I decided to do some more troubleshooting myself. While trying to track down the components of the fuel pump electrical circuit, I did quite a bit of wire wiggling at the firewall and inside behind the glove box (the location of the fuel pump relay on this car). I had a buddy turn key to "on" while listening for the fuel pump relay to click. When he did, the fuel pump ran 2-3 seconds just like its supposed to. The car started right up, and has ran since---two weeks now. My problem definitely now looks like a short in the wiring somewhere in the fuel pump circuitry. Next time it does it, I'll try to further narrow down the area of the problem. I found this one basically by accident.
