I have the same problem with my car. I just bought a 2004 VW Beetle and have never owned a convetible before. So when I saw the wings I asked if this was normal. The mechanic at the dealer said that on the 04 those wings do not retract when the top is down, only when the top is closed. Now my car will beep when I start driving because the top is not down all the way, also the indicator light shows a blinking car in the temp display letting me know the top in not down all the way. I read a solution from someone else and it said to keep keep the button to open the top pressed or pulled.......whichever is the way to open it...until the motor stops, but that did not work. So I decided to do a little research online and saw pictures of 2004 convertible VW beetles with the top down....low and behold the wings were retracted when the top was down. So the mechanic at the dealer lied. If these people do not know what their cars do and don't do, they should not be working there. They are compltley neglagant and incompitent. If anyone has an ansewr for me, it would be appreciated.

The expert I spoke with said that it had to do with a cord that makes the wings retract. If you get a flashlight to look to see if anything is disconnected. He also said it usually requires the rear seat to be taken out and he also said it was not fun. Hope this helps!

Electrics on my VW Passat TDI 2001

check all the fuses on the fuse panel (located on the end of the dashboard). Behind the plastic door, drivers side. Then see if all the windows will go up and down; locking and unlocking the door with the key in the door lock. You have to hold the key in the unlock position to make this option work.

COVErt Top stops before it is all the way down

Try using the reset proceedure of simply turning the car on and use the all windows up and down switch on the driver side door. This is used when the battery is replaced. It might re-set your motor.

Convertible top

I have the same problem. I got acetone and removed the old glue from the glass. Then  I reglued it with gorilla glue. This stuff explands into this yellow hard foam, so you have to be careful not to put on too much and not to get it on the outside of the top. I stuffed the back window area inside the car with pillows to push the glass up, then carefully applied the glue to the edge of the glass with a paintbrush. Then I covered the glued area on the outside with plastic bags of kitty litter to hold the fabric against the glass. Takes 4-5 hours to dry. Worked beautifully so far. Got a little thick and a couple places and I removed the excess with a razor blade. Then on the inside, I applied a small amount of the same glue with a paintbrush to the inside of the little track round the window. Then inserted the edge of the headliner into the track. Did all of this work with the top slightly opened to take the pressure off. So far so good. One week and counting. Hopefully it will hold up to the heat and sun.
