Just boilin over in overflow tank

Truck runs for about a half hour than boils over i the over flow tank and than all goes to the ground

2 Possible things here.....1 is a clogged cooling system and the other is a bad or blown head gasket

Its normal for the car to have antifreeze going to the overflow tank if thats what your asking.

If the coolant was hot when you noticed water coming out the radiator, that is normal from the heat expansion of the coolant. That is why there are coolant overflow tanks-also called coolant expansion tanks.
When refilling coolant, always top up the radiator, and fill the overflow tank to at least the cold mark level (about half-way up on the tank). With cap off, run engine till the thermostat opens- upper radiator hose will become hot-then shut off engine, add coolant to radiator as needed, replace cap. This method of filling will help to expel any trapped air in the system. Oh, and remember to set your heater controls on high when filling coolant, so the heater core and lines also circulate and expel air.
Check the seal on the radiator cap that it is still good. The cap seal is important to seal the coolant system, as it is a closed system under about 15 psi of pressure. The reason to pressurize the system is that the pressure will raise the boiling point of the coolant by about 10 degrees- important when you consider how hot the coolant has to be when running. OK, enough tutorial-I don't think you have a problem with the water pump! G'd luck, reeve.

The car was overheating i checked all hoses and replaced the thermostat the radiator it still is ovrheating and the water is boiling in the overflow tank


Answer could be a faulty thermostat,or it could be a sign that your head gasket is about to blow ,or last of all your timing could be out of sync.

Answer 2 from Inventus: It means your cooling system is funtioning properly. In a system having a coolant recovery tank, coolant in the radiator is always up to the brim, hot or cold. There is negligible or no air space. When coolant in the radiator expands sufficiently due to warming from the engine, it will squeeze past the pressure cap's bottom seal and flow into the recovery tank. (If no provision for such expansion was present, the expansion would rupture the radiator or your hoses.) Only coolant within the radiator is under pressure, and because of this pressure (together with the elevated boiling point that the "anti-freeze" permits), it normally does not boil. But once past the pressure cap's bottom seal, the overflow is at atmospheric pressure and therefore boils.
This boiling is usually unnoticed after a short, i.e., local, trip because the cooler coolant already in the recovery tank quenches it. But after some highway driving the influx of more hot overflow heats up all the coolant in the recovery tank to the (unpressurized, i.e., "natural") boiling point.
As the engine cools when shut off, the contracting coolant in the radiator sucks back coolant from the recovery tank. Fluid in the recovery tank should never be below the "full hot" or "full cold" marks, lest air be sucked in.

Your cooling fans are not turning on. It is not normal for your overflow tank to boil like that. It is true that your radiator is overflowing into the reserve tank, but that means yourr adiaotor is boiling. Check for blown fuses or relays for your cooling fans. IF theya re fine. run your engine for about 15 minutes and drive. When you temp level is at normal operating temp open your hood with the engine runing and see if your fans are on. If they are, then you may have a bad thermostat or a plugged radiator, or a bad water pump. If the fans are not on, get your cooling fan switch replaced if your car has one. Check your temp sending sensor

Have a malibu 2003 changed the coolant in the overflow cleaned the jug now we start the car and now it over haeats and the overflow jug boils why


you may have a faulty thermostat which stops the water from flowing through the engine causing it to boil which builds up extreme pressure forcing the water in the engine block back through the radiator into the overflow tank or it may be a faulty water pump which will do the same thing......hope this helps......cheers.

When sitting still, yes both fans on a car equipped with two fans will run. The temperature ranges you posted seem within acceptable range. That said, the water (coolant) should not boil at those high temperatures, but some overflow is expected/normal. Ensure that you are not adding pure water to the radiator and instead are premixing it with antifreeze coolant or adding premixed 50/50 that you can buy at auto stores as this will keep the water from boiling and freezing.

As an added point of information, the hose leading into the overflow jug is two-way, meaning that when the coolant in the radiator cools down enough, it creates a vacuum and pulls coolant back into the radiator.

There was an over heating problem. So I had the water pump changed, thermostat changed and the over flow jug changed. The car still goes over 200 degrees F. The radiator had stop leak in it. So it was...


200 derees is NOT very warm, only 5 degrees over thermostat opening...normal would be up to 250 or so...Still, boiling out is not normal...Have the cooling ssytem checked for exhaust fumes. There are several tests for this...
The repair is VERY expensive and may exceed teh value of the car. The issue is the head bolts strip out of the aluminum block....very pricey to fix.

But do the test first. Also, there is a smaller size bleeder hose between the engine and the fill/overflow tank, be sure it is not plugged.

Where do the hoses go from the coolent tank. One is still attached to the radiator valve


the other is just a drian hose that goes out on the bottom...its just incase you have a boil over and it lets the water that overflows out to the ground

This can happen if you have a blown head gasket...cylinder pressure enters the cooling system, driving the coolant out. To check this have a shop do a hydrocarbon test for the cooling system. Problem can also be caused by a bad cap, so check that first.

Water was boiling and spraying from overflow / reservoir tank from what appears to be a factory made hole. was there a plug in there that might have rotted off and caused this?


well that mean that oone your thermostat is not opening or your water pump or possible that a hose might be collapsing to cause the water not to flow
