Hi, I have a 2003 toyota 4runner v8 with about 120k mi. on it, and have a steering problem. The steering wheel is hard to turn as if there is no power assist, alternating between hard and normal. I had...

If you check the fluid leves and this is OK, them likely means something came loose in the pump. The only way to be sure with out replacing the pump is take it to a shop where they can hook up a pressure and read pump out put pressure.

Check if you havebits of metal in the fluid sounds like something in either the control valve or steering gear has broken down, this could go to bad sttering pump.

Keep us updated.

I OWN A 2003 TOYOTA 4RUNNER WITH 60000 MILES. OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS WE HAVE NOTICED WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A LOOSE BELT SOUND THAT LASTS FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE IS STARTED. I TOOK THE CAR TO HAVE...

It is common practice to replace belts that are 3 years or older depending on the type belt it is. The stretch and break over time with heat and cooling that goes on. Some mechanics are not trained in the proper maintainance of belts and hoses You should be having the timing belt change to. I believe if it is the ribbed type belt it is supposed to be replaced at 60 thousand miles. If you don't and the belt fails it's a $3000.00 repair minimum so $200.00 IN maintiance is in my opinion worth it. And belts can just fail even new ones. However you could also have a Tensioner pulley bearing going out causing the problem so I suggest you try a different shop. Hope this helps and thanks for using fix-ya.

If the timing belt goes is the motor gone? on a 1995 camry

Most times when the timing belt goes it results in bending a couple of the inlet valves because the pistons are coming up as the valves are going down.

Worst case is that the valves punch holes in the piston crowns

You should remove the rocker box covers and camshafts to check that all of the valve stems can be moved or more to the point all come back up to sit at the same level proving that they are travelling straight in the valve guides.

If any of them fail to sit level they are not seating on the valve face and the engine will not run anyway, in that case you will need to take the head or heads off to do a manual inspection.

2003 4 Runner has resonate vibration in steering wheel

If yours is a 2003, you might look at changing the power steering fluid. I have a 97 Accord that would start jerking the steering wheel back and forth after it had warmed up. Replaced axles and didn't work, but replaced the fluid and it hasn't happened since. Wouldn't be hard or expensive to try. Just be sure to use the right fluid.
