Bronken Timing belt. Could this have damaged other things in car

I have a 2000 Dodge Stratus that broke down on the interstate going about 60 mph. The mechanic said the timing belt broke, but could be more serious due to my speed during time of break down. What else could be wrong?

If you 2000 Dodge Stratus is equipped with either the 2.0 Liter (SOHC) 4 cylinder engine or the 2.5 Liter (SOHC) V6 then you have serious engine damage. Both these engines are interference engines. When the belt breaks the pistons will make contact with the valves thus causing damage. The belt on the 4 cylinder should have been replaced at 100,000 miles. The belt on the V6 should have been replaced at 60,00 miles. At 60 mph you for sure are going to have some damage. How much damage, you will know when they open it up.

Well it could have bent your valves when the belt broke and if that's the case your going to have to remove the head and replace the valves and lifters.

Could be a" interference "or a "non-interference"engine that pistons will slap the open valves and bend them...check at parts store to see which engine it is and the likleyhood of causing lots of damage.....most manufacures will have notched pistons these days so valves will not be hit....good luck...Lee

Well he has said that because depending on the motor you have in the car 2.0 , 2.4 or 2.5 you most likely have a interference motor and when the timing belt breaks while running the valves come into contact with the pistons and bend them cause severe internal damage and requiring valve work and replacing.

in you have any more question please ask. bt this doubles the original repair sometimes even more.

the 2.0 liter is an interference engine and valve damage can occur if the belt brakes.

the 2.4 liter is not an interference engine

the 2.5 liter is an interference engine and valve damage can occur if the timing belt breaks.

How can i tell if a timing chain broke on a 2006 dodge stratus 4 cyl

Hi!

If you have a 4 Cylinders, Then you have a timing belt not a chain. And when the timing belt breaks the car will not run at all and if it was running, Then the car will stall and the engine will be damaged due to the pistons hitting the valves and bend them. So you may want to check it and maybe change it if the car is around 60.000 miles before its too late. Good luck

1994 Dodge stratus 2.4 dohc Car died and will not start You turn timing belt by had a little and when you try to start it you get 1 revolution and it stops again Any help? Thanks

Did you turn the timing belt or the drive belt, because it sounds as if the timing belt broke. have this checked. if the belt broke the piston may have slapped the valves, this would have bent them. expensive repair

My timing belt broke on my 1997 Dodge Stratus, 2.4. Is it a for sure thing that the valves are bent? How do I change the belt and check to see if the valves are bent? many thanks, NC

mine broke on my 2000 and i lucked out, the top end was unharmed. the cheapest route is to have someone change the timing belt, fire it up and see if it runs. it will spit and sputter at first while adjusting the timing, but after a few minutes it will clear up. if it runs like ****, your valves are shot. the 2.4 is a non interference motor, so it's the luck of the irish on your side.
