It can be caused by many things.

  1. Thermostat stuck closed
  2. Water pump failure
  3. Cooling fan failure
  4. Thermal switch failure
  5. Blown head gasket
  6. Clogged radiator internally or externally
  7. Defective radiator cap
Have you been loosing coolant with no apparent leak? If so, suspect a blown head gasket and seek professional help immediately. Do not drive the vehicle. If not, was the cooling fan running when this happened? If not suspect a bad fan motor, blown fuse, or defective thermal switch. Turn on the ignition, and the A/C without starting the engine. The fan should run continuously. If it does not then the fan motor is bad or the fuse is blown. Check the fuse. If the fan runs then service the cooling system. Set the heater control to HOT and drain all coolant from the system. Flush the radiator with a water hose. Replace the thermostat with the exact same type that you remove. Look on the thermostat for the temperature at which it opens. Now pour in a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. If you mix it yourself buy 1 gallon of antifreeze and 1 gallon of distilled water. If you buy it pre-mixed, buy 2 gallons of pre-mix. Pour it in until it is full and then start the engine with the heater set to HOT. Let the engine run and keep adding coolant until it will take no more and you no longer see air bubbles escaping. Make sure it has reached at least around 190 degrees so the thermostat will open. Install the new radiator cap and let it run until you know all is well. The cooling fan should cycle on and off. If it does not then replace the thermal switch at this time.

If you see any antifreeze, you are losing it and it will be costly (or fatal) if you don't determine where it is coming from-until you find it, make certain you fill the overflow when the car is COLD to the cold fill line-do it everyday, until you can locate the leak.

TO CHANGE RADIATOR FIRST YOU TURN OFF RADIO FIRST TO KEEP FROM LOSING RADIO CODE.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.RAISE FRONT OF VECHICLE SUPPORT ON JACK STANDS.REMOVE THE LOWER SPLASH SHIELDS.NOW YOU NEED TO DRAIN THE COOLING SYSTEM.CATCH COOLANT IN A LARGE DRAIN PAN.REUSE COOLANT IF ITS FAIRLY NEW.IF COOLANT VERY OLD CHANGE IT.PUT OLD COOLANT IN SOME EMPTY CONTAINER TAKE TO A GARAGE OR WHOEVER DISPOSE IT.DONT POUR ON GROUND.HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT.MOVE THE AIR INTAKE DUCT PASSES OVER THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE.NOW WHEN ALL COOLANT DRAIN OUT.LOOSEN UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSE CLAMPS.THEN DETACH THE RADIATOR HOSES FROM THE FITTINGS.IF THEY ARE STUCK GRASP EACH HOSE NEAR THE END WITH A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE PLIERS AND TWIST IT TO BREAK THE SEAL THEN PULL IT OFF REMOVE SMALL COOLANT SURGE LINES FROM TOP OF RADIATOR THAT GOES TO THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR..DISCONNECT COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.THEN REMOVE THE COOLING FAN.REMOVE DISCONNECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES GET READY TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID THEN PLUG LINES. NOW UNSCREW THE FOUR BOLTS TWO ON EACH SIDE OF THE RADIATOR THAT ATTACH RADIATOR TO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSOR CAREFULLY TIP TOP OF THE RADIATOR SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE ENGINE.REMOVE THE UPPER RADIATOR SEAL AND LIFT RADIATOR FROM THE ENGINE.NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE THE UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSES WITH NEW ONES SINCE ALL COOLANT REMOVE I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.NOW WHEN YOU GET READY TO INSTALL NEW RADIATOR USE SHEETS OF CARD BOARD PROTECT RADIATOR FINS AND CORES FROM DAMAGE WHILE SITTING RADIATOR BACK IN PLACE.ONCE YOU GET UPPER AND LOWER HOSES IN PLACE ALSO PLACE SMALL SURGE HOSES FROM THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR TO RADIATOR NEW THERMOSTAT AND TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES ALL HOOK UP. I want to change my antifreeze in my 2003 merc grand marque. Where is the drain plug on the radiator? Do I pour the new antifreeze into the overflow tank on top when I refill it?


look down at rad from top to get familiar with where i am talking about. now opposite side of the lower rad hose is where you want to go, two styles of rads, one has a wing nut type white plug, and other as 6 sided white plug, unthread with pliers or by hand loosen till desired flow is coming out. fill into reservior or overflow tank to half way and run engine til i reaches operating temperature and you has good heat out of heater, this makes sure all air is out of system, and this is complete ttop up to full and install cap

Need diagram where bottom radiater hose attaches to engine where it appears to be leaking


This is how I like to do it. Make sure the car is parked with the front end at an upward angle. Drain the coolant from the petcock at the bottom of the radiator. Remove the upper and lower hoses at the radiator. Remove the thermostat housing, and the heater core hoses at the fire wall. Flush out the radiator by pouring fresh water into the overflow, and the hole where the thermostat was. Flush the heater core as best you can by pouring fresh water into the heater core hose connections.
Let all the water drain out, then button everything back up and replace the thermostat with a new one. Refill the rad and engine by filling the coolant reservoir with a mix of 50% water and 50% antifreeze, or buy the premixed stuff from the auto parts store. (Buy 4 jugs of premix or 2 of straight antifreeze)
Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature and the upper rad hose gets hot. Rev the engine a little to help get the air out of the cooling system. When the thermostat opens, the coolant level will drop in the reservoir, so top it up and replace the cap.
Check for leaks, and check the coolant level for the next few days, and check for leaks.
Dispose of the old coolant responsibly

Antifreeze keeps leaking out


COULD BE A HEATER BY PASS HOSE THAT GOES INTO FIRE WALL THAT CONNECTS TO THE HEATER CORE. CHECK ALL HOSES GOOD LUCK
