Question about 2006 AMC J10

3 Answers

I have recentley purchased a 1974 jeep CJ-5 for five hundred dollars. Yes it needs some work. I don't know anything about the person who owned it when the changes were made, but I have got to un-do what he did. Starting at the transmission which is a manual (don't know whether it is a three speed or four speed) this guy made a spacer from 1/8 or 3/16 plate steel and placed it between the transmission and bell housing, when he discovered that the starter motor would not engage the flywheel he took a rotory disk grinder and ground off an un-known amount of metal on the bell housing where the starter motor mounts. No, this did not work. their is a chain going from one side of the frame over the top of the bell housing to the other side of the frame which I assume is to hold the rear of the engine in place. the engine is a AMC 304 v-8. I don't know if it runs, their is no battery, or fan belt, and four spark plug wires are missing. I want to take the v-8 out and put a six in it's place, once I know what transmitission is in place, what bell housing will I need? If it is a three speed I'm going to replace it with a T-18 four speed.

the adapter plate was home made. the transmission shows no signes of replacement. If you would have read the rest of the letter you would have read about the grinding on the bell housing in an attempt to make the starter motor engage the fly wheel. also you would have read the part about the engine. not being properly mounted

The previous two experts missed. As I said in the original letter I want to replace the 304 v-8 with an in line 6 cylinder engine. I can't use the old bell housing, so I need an engine, bell housing, AND I want a four speed transmission. is the T-18 four speed a good transmission for moderate trail use, that is trails rated 1 through 3. What cubic inch AMC 6 cylinder engines are available? What horsepower raitings? What bellhousing will I eed for a T-18 transmission? Is it possible to use a Ford 6 cylider and a Ford four speed transmission in a jeep CJ-5? What problems will I encounter?

The tires, brakes, suspension, wiring, seats, and top are fine. there is some serious rust in the back of body, but I can take care of this. In fact, the majority of this jeep is in surprisingly good condition. But he ruined the bell housing when he took a grinder to it to try and make the starter motor engage the fly wheel. Now, what problems would I likely encounter if I want to put a Ford 6 cylinder egine and a Ford 4 speed transmission in this jeep CJ-5?

TRK, A thirty five year old vehicle would requires overhaul of most of its systems. The engine you want to change to a six and also the gearbox to a four and one types. Besides these changes you will have to have new wiring, new battery, new distributor with rotor etc. The differential too may need your attention. Not to speak of tyres and brakes and the seats, top, the body itself, whatever little it has. have I missed out on anything? The bell housing may work as most engines have the same size flywheel and similar bolts to fasten the two faces.

What I foresee is that the ford engine and the gearbox will match or in other words interface with each other, but your problem COULD be the matching of the bell housing and its counterpart on the transfer case. main thing would be the bolts and their threads matching. I used to have a similar vehicle some times in the early 80s. The housing matched perfectly with the gear box or rather the transfer case. I had put a four cylinder diesel in it. Ran beautifully and gave a tremendous mileage. So would this one.
Just ensure the mountings of the engine and the gearbox.

That spacer is a transmission adapter, it means that the trans in the car is not the right one, the adapter plates are made so you can use a GM or Ford trans in place of the weak jeep unit, go to the link for all the parts you will need.

I have a 94 SL 5 spd with manual steering. What hardware do I need to convert to power steering?

The car itself is worth 500 dollars if it runs, you are going to spend twice that much converting it. So spend a thousand dollars and buy a 99 saturn with power steering and then sell yours for five hundred. That way you are only out 500 and all of your parts are 5 years newer.

I need a simple signal and brake light wiring diagram. I am working on a 1974 CJ6 Jeep and I have all the lights working except for the brake lights. How do I solve this problem doing the work myself. This...

Owning a Jeep the best purchase you can make is a Chitons or Haynes manual. It will have all the wiring diagrams you could need in there. A test light will also prove handy. To see if the lights are actually working when by yourself I just wedge a 2x4 on the pedal and look.
