You need to narrow down which cylinder before wasting more money. take each plug wire off while at idle, see if one makes little or no change in the miss, then verify that the plug wire is good, and vacuum leaks? make sure the big intake hose is secure with no leaks between the air filter and the throttle body, if the egr valve is slightly open it will cause a vacuum leak that you wont be able to find, make sure its closed all the way, these can get coated with carbon and not close completely/

This is because of the improper combustion, so you check the air filter, if the air filter is not good enough then the idling will go down and then the back firing will occur, in the same time check the Electronic ignition system for proper ignition cycle.

a couple ways to check 1 pull a spark plug see if you feel air from hole while cranking
2 remove distributor cap see if rotor is moving while cranking
you can spray carb cleaner in carb to see if that help it start
good luck

How about the pick up coil in the distributor? A trick we used to use back in the day was to tap the distributor housing with a hammer, key word tap. If the engine missed or stalled than the pick-up coil was replaced.

with older cars its a good idea before going for an inspection to check or change the air filter do an oil and filter change check the spark plugs for correct gap and carbon buildup change if dirty .check and replace as needed the dist cap and rotor if fuel injected have the injectors professionally cleaned by a shop . if it has a carb it just may need an air adjustment or a rebuild.if all of the above is good your cat converter is probably bad and needs to be changed. hope this helps
