The doors may have a foam seal around the edge that has partially dissolved and gotten sticky. Cigarette smoke accelerates this kind of decay.

Why 2005 pilot gets too much cabin heat even when turned off

There is blend door in vent channels under the dash of the vehicle. It blends warm and cool air in the vents depending on the temperature setting. The Blend Door is controlled by a motor called an actuator that gets its signals from the setting on the dash. When the actuator fails the blend door can't move. If it stops on hot you always get hot air.
3 possibilitys
1. Blend Door stuck.
2. Temperature control not sending signal to actuator.
3. Actuator motor gone bad.

Of the 3 possibilities the actuator motor is the most common and the easiest to fix. The part is $40-90. I don't know exactly where actuator is on the Pilot. My GMC you remove the plastic trim below the dash and its just to the left of the glove box near the 'hump'. Perhaps the part store can tell you or someone else will offer the exact location.

Once you remove the actuator you can plug it back in to the wire clip and move the temperature knob and see if it moves. When you get the new one plug it in and make sure it turns before bolting it in.

To clarify a bit. The heater is never technically turned off. The blend door determines how much it goes thru the vents.

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus and the other day the A/C just started blowing hot air. I took it to Autozone this morning and we changed to cabin filter and I'm getting cold air but its only coming out by...

I am guessing at your model, but I have had this same problem. The blend door actuator is directly behind your radio assembly. There should be 4 holes.. 2 on each side.. They make a fancy little tool that you poke into these holes and it releases the whole assembly. Once you remove this the blend door actuator motor is straight ahead.

Once you get the radio out, if you still have questions then shoot me an email. It will be a black plastic gadget about 3 inches by 4 inches or so with a small electric plug. It is bolted to the plastic blower housing with some 8mm head screws.
If it turns out not to be the motor and possible a broken blend door.. I have enclosed a link below that might give you some help..

Best of Luck!!

Heater wont work, fan runs, but cant chamge temp 2001 F150 SUPERCREW 5.4

Do you hear any clicking or popping noises coming from dash area when you try to change the temperature? If so, you have either a bad blend door actuator or a broken blend door. If it's just the actuator, you can find it by following the popping noise to the location. It is under the dash close to the passenger's side of the vehicle. The actuator is easy to change once you find it. If the blend door is broken, you will have to pull the dash out and remove the air plenum from inside the dash to gain access to the blend door.

On my buick lesabre limited 2001, the passenger side a/c and heat is not working.

NOT WORKING MEANS. NO AIR FLOW? OR TEMPERATURE? SOUNDS LIKE A BLEND DOOR ISSUE. IF YOU MOVE THE MODE CONTROL ON THE DASH TO A DIFFERENT POSITION DOES ANYTHING CHANGE. IF YOU HEAR A CLICKING OR POPPING NOISE THE PLASTIC ARM ON THE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR IS BROKEN.

No heat in 2006 pontiac torrent, only cold air it

It sounds like your blend door is broken. I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent as well and this happened to me last spring. Luckily, I live in AZ so I didn't have to deal with it until now. It costs approximately $1000 to fix as they have to take the entire dash out of the car. I will take all day to fix a piece of the car that costs $97. Pontiac should do a recall as this happens to almost every car.

unfortunatelly this type of trucks has very comun problems with the blend door geting broken, make sure to have the bleen door inspected for posible broken part, be carrefull some mechanics will misdiagnose saying the blend door motor is bad, ask to doble check for posible blen door problem, the blend door controls the heat and cold, going to your cab
