Question about 1993 Ford Ranger SuperCab

Possible tranmission slippage??

After start-up on cold mornings, the truck (automatic transmission) will hesitate after shifting into drive after backing out of the driveway, and will not ''go into gear'', or move forward without revving the engine, OR shifting into park, turning the truck off, restarting the truck, and then shifting back into drive. After warming up, you can shift from drive to reverse all day without issues, AND, the issue usually does not present itself on warm mornings. Is this a transmission issue or something else.

First thing is check your transmission fluid. Make sure it doesn't smell burnt and is full. Make sure the truck is warmed up and idling when you check the fluid. If it is low add fluid and recheck. If not it is due a transmission service to adjust the bands and linkage for proper operation. Hopefully you have caught the problem before it became too serious.

Yes this is a defective trans, u either have a worn out direct clutch or a hydraulic leak inside the trans, u can try changing the fluid and filter it may help, if not you will need to replace the trans.

My van won't shift gears properly.Mechanic did not think it was the transmission but gear slippage. Bought some Lucas to put in it but it didn't help.

well the gears are within the transmission, even if it is rear wheel drive (differential will not cause slippage) shifting issues can u describe in more detail-harsh engagment when cold? engine revs for a while (delayed engagment) before vehicle moves forward or upshifts. what colour does the fluid look like? does it smell burnt? when was the last time the trans was serviced? is the level correct? is the correct fluid being used for top up?is there any transmission dtc's or is the check engine light on? slipage occurs when the clutch packs are worn, glazed or contaminated-there is also the possiblity of lack of adequate hydraulic pressure which is generated from the front pump, there could also be an issue with the
valve body and or shift solenoids. so he could be correct with the gears being ok as there are more dynamics to the tranmission operation, pending of the transmissions path of power-planetary gear set it could be an intermidiate band not fully holding the forward drum....pending on path of power. anyways a
simple pressure test of main line pressure will help in determining tranmission overall condition cause if you have one internal fault trans requires removal and at that point it'll have to come apart at that point you may as well be doing a complete rebuild.

Low transmission fluid is usually the only reason power engages late or slippage occurs. But changing the transmission fluid again would not hurt. The stuff really shouldn't deteriorate like engine oil. Be sure to not run the vehicle many miles until the problem is completely resolved < 100 miles. One easy check would be to make sure the transmission lines are well connected and maintain pressure as well as fluid level. The good thing is that Toyota has a reputation of very good transmissions.

Check for vacuum lines going to transmission or any vacuum line under hood. It is possible an animal chewed on the lines or wires. We get a few reports of that at Fixya.

You might also look under the dash by the pedals for a vacuum leak. There are vacuum switches for parking brake release and the neutral start switch.
