Check the needle and seat in the carbs, sounds as if the needle is not seating allowing gas to flow till pressure in the lines drop. Since bowl is full the gas will force its way out any place it can. Usually a gasket. Good luck!! Hope I gave you an idea of where to look.

What is measurement of a float level on a carter one barel carburetor on a jeep cj5 1977?

1977 now that is a blast from the past.
finding books that old is hard, but are sold in book stores.
but from Carter, and very very old jeep books.
4 engine then
and 2 Carters, i see.
232/258cu-in, with YF carb
here ill paste the words

"To adjust the float drop, hold the air horn in the upright position and measure the distance between the top of the float, at the extreme outer end, and the air horn casting. The measurement should be 11/4 in. (31.75mm) to 1973, 13/8 in. (35mm) 1974-78. Adjust by bending the tab at the rear of the float lever."

I have a 1984 jeep cherokee pioneer 2.5 l.engine that has 360,000 miles on it. Almost immediately after I change the oil it reeks of gas. What are possible reasons behind this and how can it be fixed?

it's a carb engine and carb fuel pump.
redux for "IT"

OR DID "IT" MEAN THE OIL STINKS OF GAS.
NOT CLEAR.
i drained the oil and the catch pan stinks of raw fuel.
THE GAS DILUTED WITH GAS, CAN BE 2 THINGS.
ON CARB CARS.
1: THE BLOCK MOUNTED FUEL PUMP is bad and leaks fuel into the crankcase, badly and fast.'

2: carb float valve is stuck, open and fuel flowing like crazy out all jets and nozzles , un controlled...

84 XJ Pioneer. AMC 2.5L
not to many of these left on the road.
it had a Rochester or Carter CARB.
Ever check float levels on it?
or rebuild a carb? with new float valve, that does not stick?

take off air cleaner
stall engine, at same moment look down carb bore
(horn) does it still leak fuel engine off?
oops. (float stuck)
if not, then jump on fuel pump bad inside. replace it.

What are the settings on a Marvel-Schebler TSX 775 carburetor

Unfamiliar with this exact model #, but if this is a 1 barrel tractor carb, float should be level when inverted (ie: float edge parallel with carb edge), Main jet screwed in until bottoms (lightly) then out 1 1/2 turns (just starting point, must be fine tuned while running), Idle jet bottomed then 1 1/2 turn to start, then fine tune. All final settings made while running and fully warmed up.

Fuel runs out of carbs when cranking engine

Sounds like the floats are stuck or not holding air.
The float works much like a toilet float. It has air inside and floats on top of the gas, shutting off the valve when the gas level is high enough.
Could also have dirt in the valve.
I know you said they were rebuilt but were they tested ?
You may have to take the carbs off and bench test them using gravity feed fuel lines.

I HAVE AN 82 F-100 FORD PICK-UP WITH A STRIGHT 6 1B CARB. I PUT A NEW CARB BUT ITS SPILLING GAS AND THROWING BLACK SMOKE WHEN I START IT HOW CAN I ADJUST THE FLOT AND MIXTURES CAN YOU HELP ME THANK YOU...

You probably have a Carter carb. The metal tag on the top, held on by one of the screws should say YF/YFA. If so, you need to remove all the screws on the top and you will see the float. It should be .78 inches from the bottom(about 3/4 inch). I doubt being new that the float needs adjusted though. If it sat on the shelf long the float might be sticking. You will need to tap lightly (maybe using a wrench, or small hammer).
The idle mixture screw is in the front bottom of the carb but it has a limiter cap on it. It shouldn't really need adjusted either

My 88 isuzu picup. How do I adjust the idle speed?

I just repaired my '94 and it had similiar problems. Too much fuel was flowing through the carb. Mileage dropped way off.

I rebuilt the carb but the real problem was a bent tang on the float. This resulted in the failure of the needle valve to close completely, regardless of the float level.

Bad seal. Rebuild the Carb with a new kit and make sure you have no extra parts. You should be able to get a carb rebuild kit from your local auto parts store.

Gas leaking out of a 1983 cordoba top of carburetor

Did the carb kit come with a new float? It sounds like the float level is not set right, it has a hole in it or the needle is not seating right. If the float is not set correctly it will hit on the carb body before it shuts off the fuel flow with the needle and seat. If the float has a hole in it it will fill with fuel and not float at the proper angle to shut the fuel off when the desired level is reached. Remove the top of the carb and inspect the float when closed it should be just about level with the top plate from the carb. Shake the float and see if you hear any liquid in the float. Also are you running a mechanical or electric pump? Mike
P.S. I myself have forgotten to install the needle in a carb rebuild.

Let me know how you make out.
