I had the code p0042 come up on my 05 pontiac g6 was wondering what it could be or what should I check

Code 42 is a problem with the heater circuit for the O2 sensor number 3. That is usually the sensor after the catalytic converter.
The heater is not working which could be a faulty sensor or a problem with the power circuit going to the sensor.

How many catalytic converters does a 2009 g6 2.2 have

I'm not 100% sure about the 2009, but I don't see much of a difference from the 2005 models on up. I own a 2005 and I have 2 catalytic converters.

How can I tell which catalytic converter is bad on my 2005 Pontiac g6

If its restricted there will be a loss of engine power. If exhaust has the rotten egg smell converter is over worked due to excessive fuel, check fuel system. Restriction can be checked with a vacuum gauge. Connect gauge to full manifold vacuum, speed engine to about 1800 rpm's vacuum should rise if vacuum decreases there is a restriction in the exhaust system.

Engine reduced power

Your catalytic converters may be plugged. They have had problems out of the converters on the G6s. Probably have to take it to a mechanic, but im going to forewarn you, a catalytic converter for a G6 is around $1,000.00 each, and if its a V6 theres two converters. What I did was went on ebay and I found 2 brand new converters, one was $227.00 and the other $238.00 free shipping on that one, and they also have remanufactures converters too.

I too have a Pontiac G6 with a rattling catalytic converter. I was told that it need to be replace but is drivable by the Pontiac dealership. Today my car sound like a race car muffler and the check...

You'll want to go over your warranty information as emission systems have different warranties than the rest of the car. It might be possible to have the cat replaced for free if it still qualifies under the EPA warranty.

Anyway, you probably blew the exhaust gasket before the cat in question as there is too much back pressure in there since the cat is likely clogged.

Ok you should use a code reader to clear the code. It can be rented at the auto parts store. The pontiac G6's have an issue with the catalytic converter this may need to be replaced. Try the dealership as with less 60k miles it may be a free replacement.

2005 Pontiac G6. The check engine light came on, reset it and now I do not have heat in my car.

Well lets see - resetting the Check Engine light will not, in itself, have anything to do with now not having any heat from your heater.

Why the Check Engine light was on in the first place may have a lot to do with it.

If your engine is low on engine coolant (antifreeze) your heater will not work. Low coolant levels and/or engine overheating will also set fault codes in your computer and turn the Check Engine light on.

It is NEVER good to reset a Check Engine light without properly diagnosing and repairing the reason it was on. At best, it could wreck your catalytic converters, making it extremely expensive to get through an emissions inspection. At worst, it could cost you an engine.
