Question about 2002 Volkswagen Passat
The heater on the Passat works by always heating the heater core and then mixing hot and cold air to give the amount of heat your request. It does this with the blend door which is at the very bottom center of the dash, just above the carpet. A code reader isn't going to tell you a single solitary thing. Search for articles on fixing the blend door and I think you'll have found your problem. You are fortunate it isn't the heater core.

You will need someone with a code reader to see if the heater control valve motors are working really need more info
