At rear of engine above the starter motor goes into the bell housing. You must access it from under the car, it is a bear to reach on the ground.

It could be the Crank Position Sensor. But that just a guess. BUT.... they are common to go bad, buy one from the dealer, most aftermarket parts (non dealer) are not good.

Crankshaft position sensor. Located at the front are of transmission. When the crank rotates it read off the location or position and knows "I need to fire on this stroke, but if the sensor don't pick it up, it has no idea and therefore will only turn over. Jeeps are bad about this one problem. Part is $50 +/- a few. and easy to put in.

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee cuts off while driving

Sounds a whole lot like a dirty or malfuncitionig idle air control valve. A coil would generally show up as a miss under load or high rpm, crank sensors generally work or they dont, only sometimes giving you a miss, but that would be all the time at any rpm. Computer, I doubt for too many reasons to list. Could also be related to a bad throttle position sensor or a very slight vacuum leak.

I would be thinking that there is a good chance that you need to be checking out replacing the computer, if you aren't getting any communication with the proper scan tool then the computer isn't communicating with anything in the vehicle...... I would have guessed first off that the ignition control module might be bad but that is obviously part of the computer also, I would be looking in that direction.
