Be sure the radiator fan is coming on first. Let the car warm up pop the hood and observe the fan it should come on within a ten minute period. If the fan doesn't come on the problem is either a fan temperature switch or a fan relay is bad. If the fan works ok replace the thermostat, also be sure the coolant is at a 50 / 50 mixture of water and antifreeze.

Does the temp gauge show overheat? If not, then you're not overheating. Possible you have a head gasket problem,which lets combustion gas into the water and can look like boilover.

You change the head gasket

The spitting is cylinder pressure or combustion
gases blowing out coolant

Overheating coolant boiling out into reserve tank


you have a blown head gasket.. doesn't have to have coolant in the oil for a blown head gasket... if hoses are rock hard when running then you have exhaust leaking into the coolant via a blown head gasket...

I would certainly give attention to the radiator.
I am assuming that the engine overheated and the heads warped causing the head gaskets to "blow".

I would consider inveting in a new radiator.

Overheating changed thermostat but no change


Warm up the car and pay attention to the coolant reserve tank.
If you see bubbles raising up from the bottom of the reserve tank then you has exhaust leak at the head gasket,

I have a 99 Mercury Sable Wagon that keeps boiling the radiator fluid out of the reserve tank. The temp gauge isn't reading hot, though. Any suggestions? Thanks.


Sounds to me like a blown head gasket. Even if your vehicle is not warmed up, if your reserve tank is boiling fluid out of it when the engine is cool, it's most likely losing compression from it all going to your reserve tank. And thats why it's fluids coming out of your reserve tank. BUT, if your radiator is clogged then the same thing could happen. So i would start out cheap before you have to replace a HG. Your engine is pressurizing the coolant system through a leak in the head-gasket, it could be airgaps but I'm going to be your head gasket needs replacement.

My car is running hot have new water pump i`ve check thermostat and doesn`t have one not leaking water no water on motor and trying to check too see if radiator have a butterfly to drain the water it has.


When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BEKIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat2_bing.gif open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may bepartially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do ahydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

99 GrandAm still overheating after replacing comon problem parts.


did you bleed the air from the system? how do u know u don't have a leaking head gasket, have u had it checked with a gas analyzer?
