Why does my engine electrics light come on from time to time on my dash warning lights array. my vehicle is a 2002 beetle 2ltr petrol with only 20,000miles on the clock , the light does not affect any operation of engine ,but worrying. thanks

Not without clearing codes. And if the check engine light is on due to an actual problem, it can turn the other warning light on too so you know those systems are disabled. Usually a problem with ABS or traction control will not turn on the check engine light.
Your owners manual would talk more about what the lights mean.
I would have the engine computer scanned for trouble codes first.

Yes it may be the wires are shorting or its actually the problem with instrument cluster.
Also get the vehicle scanned for any error codes stored in computer this will confirm whether is short circuit issue or actual problem:------

You need to have an OBII scan (fault scan) there's many things that can trigger dash lights. Have BMW or a good competent shop look at it for you. Water in fuel won't shut down car abruptly unless it's gallons of water.

Hello! The Check Engine Light comes on when there is a vehicle trouble...Each trouble has a code...There are many such codes...Take your Beetle to an auto parts store, and for no charge, they will run a code scan...When you have the code, come back to me and I'll fix your problem......

chance are you have a pinched wire in the door jam and when you shut the door its grounding out...

Malfunction indicator light it is the symbol of your engine with a line of suffering and the word "CHECK" -- this could be something minor like needing a spark plug to be replaced (common problem) or to something more serious like engine electrical work needed. a flashing engine light is the more serious so you are not to worry.

most likely if you look under the 2 front seats and inspect the wires that come from the belt you'll find a broken wire. just repair broken wire and you'll be back in business.
