Question about 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

1 Answer

How do I change the alternator in a 2000 chevy silverado. It does not appear to be a serpentine belt, and the only answer I have is to take the pulley off of the alternator.

There is one pulley. I guess it is a serpentine belt, there is not a tensioner for me to loosen the belt. The alternator sits on the top, drivers side. Is secured by two bolts. It does not move or tighten anything. I took the belt off using a crow bar and a long screwdriver. Not sure how I will get it back on.

When I said one pulley I mean just a pulley, it controls nothing. The belt runs 6 things to include the alternator and the pulley.

The reason I was having trouble is/was because the tension pulley was frozen-it did not work properly. I had to take it, the tension pulley thing, off of the truck and "work" it over and over again. Thank you for your help..

IF NOT A SERPENTINE BELT, THEN THE ALTERNATOR SHOULD(?) BE MOUNTED ON A BRACKET THAT ALLOWS FOR ADJUSTABLE TENSION? HOW MANY PULLEYS DOES THE BELT RUN THROUGH OR IS IT A DEDICATED BELT JUST FOR THE ALTERNATOR? iF NOT DEDICATED AND ROUTED LIKE A SERP, THEN A JOHNSON BAR IS USED TO PIVOT THE ASSEMBLY AND RELIEVE BELT TENSION.

There is a belt tensioner it will use a 3/8 drive ratchet there is an index 1n the tensioner for it this will allow you to release the belt, remove the 14mm bolts and the alternator will be free

The belt has tension applied to it from an idler pulley arm. you need to release tension by using a socket and ratchet on the nut on the idler pulley. Release tesion and slide belt off . Make sure you have the diagram for serpentine belt. it is usualy under the hood. If not make a diagram yorself before removing belt.

How do I change the serpentine belt on a 2002 chevy silverado Z71 5.3?

With a wrench you need to raise the tensioner that tightens the belt to the point that you can get it off the alternator.Once the belt is off the pulleys then you need to get it over the rad fan blade by feed it over them one at a time until it is off. There is a belt routeing guide under the hood to help you route the new one.Sounds easy but the tensioner can require a couple of wrenches hooked together because the have a lot of tension.

85 chevy c-10 silverado. How do put on an

on some models the belt ran around both if you do not have the old belt get a piece of string and wrap it around the pulleys for the alternator. have the alternator set about halfway on the adjustment bracket. two bolts hold the alternator one on the bottom and one on the top loosen both up enough to allow you to move the alternator but the belt on and rotate the alternator until tight enough you can't push it down more than a 1/4 of an inch.

check your serpentine belt it sounds like it may have stretched or broken. Without the belt working properly your car will overheat due to the waterpump not activating and neither will the power steering or alternator

Chevy silverado 2000 serpentine belt replacement?

Mike, the belt routing should be on a sticker under your hood, these use a spring belt tensioner and it is easiest to us a 3/8 or 1/2 breakover to pull the tensioner back then the belt is easily removed and replaced, please do not rate me at all if it is not a fixya, thats the only reason do this is for my score. Thanks, and merry Christmas.
