Well the temperature control gage is connected to the engine block and consists of 1 wire for the reading of the motor heat either the sensor is going bad or you need to check your coolant levels in the radiator make sure the engine is cool before opening the thermostat cap to the radiator so not to get burnt ...also make sure the wire itself is not grounding out on the engine block to give the gage to give such a readout look to the engine and usually on the drivers side lower the plug wires you should see a plug with a wire coming from it ensure the wire is not rubbing on anything .

Coolant quality poor?
Blockage/Air lock in cooling system.
Water pump giving out?
Temp sensor faulty?
Bad gauge?

I don't think it's the thermostat, so much, as the circuit for the temperature gauge which includes, wiring to the cts (coolant temperature sender), the cts itself, and the gauge. It's likely a wiring problem if it randomly bounces from normal to hot while driving the vehicle or standing still.

Have a 1988 Nissan Maxima. Temp gauge runs right up to hot line. There are two fan blades. The right fan blade is not working. What could cause this problem?

The motor could be bad, or the wiring to it is faulty, or a fusible link has blown to the radiator blower motor.
